Toyota is set to re-enter the B-MPV segment with the Verso-S, an all-new model that will make its world debut at the Paris motor show, prior to anticipated launch in the UK early in 2011.

Small, spacious and smart, Verso-S is an object lesson in space management. Although it has the shortest overall length of any B-segment MPV in Europe – less than four metres – careful attention to detail and a practical, flexible interior design have maximised usable space, comfort and perceived quality.

The 2011 Avalon goes on sale in April. Pricing has not yet been announced.
Toyota gives the 2011 Avalon a more memorable and substantial grille, along with a bigger helping of chrome trim, redesigned rocker panels and new headlights. New 17-inch wheels on the Limited grade get a 10-spoke design with a flashy mirror finish.
Interior changes include what Toyota says are “highly readable” gauges “that use graduated white illumination with white pointers.” The gauges are set in a new instrument panel. Rear headrests have been reshaped and enlarged. New standard equipment includes Bluetooth, XM Satellite Radio, and USB and auxiliary connections for iPod and other audio devices.

The redesigned Avalon gets the carry-over 268-horsepower 3.5-liter V6 linked to a six-speed automatic transmission.

The Avalon will be available in two grades, base and Limited. Both grades have standard eight-way leather-trimmed power driver seats, a back-up camera, dual-zone automatic climate control, a moonroof and 17-inch alloy wheels. The Limited model adds such standard features as rain-sensing wipers, Smart Key and cooled leather seats

Europe’s best-selling pick-up with a segment share of 25%, the Toyota Hilux is now available with an improved 2.5 litre D-4D diesel engine for 4WD versions. Introduced to match the segment evolution, the 144 DIN hp diesel engine will allow Hilux to remain segment leader.

Already renowned amongst professionals for its durability and reliability, and of ever-increasing appeal to leisure drivers, the Toyota Hilux is available with a choice of three body types –the Single Cab workhorse, the Extra Cab and the SUV-style Double Cab.

The improved 2.5 litre D-4D engine is available on 4WD versions of all three body types. Its power output has been increased by 24 hp to 144 DIN hp, and maximum torque has increased by 18 Nm to 343 Nm.

This power increase has been achieved through the adoption of a DC motor-actuated, variable nozzle vane-type turbocharger and the use of new injectors featuring Generation 3 Solenoid (G3S) technology. The new injectors offer more precise fuel injection, improving throttle response and performance.

As a result, the Toyota Hilux 2.5 D-4D 4WD’s 0-100 km/h acceleration time has improved by 2.5 seconds to 12.5 seconds, and its top speed has increased by 15 km/h to 170 km/h. Despite these significant performance increases, its CO2 emissions remain at only 219 g/km – second best in segment.

The introduction of the improved 2.5 D-4D 4WD further strengthens an already comprehensive Hilux range. With a choice of three body types, three engines, 5-speed manual and automatic transmissions, and two- or four-wheel drive, Europe’s pick-up of choice satisfies the requirements of the widest possible professional and leisure customer base.

After making its official debut two months ago at the Tokyo Auto Salon, the Toyota FT-86 Concept a modified 21st century incarnation of the old AE-86 Toyota Corolla better known as the Hachi Roku has already been spotted on the cover of the Japanese Option magazine, a journal that can be considered the bible for JDM tuning enthusiasts. Mimicking the classic Sprinter Trueno two tone paint scheme with its red and black stripes the tuned FT-86 also appears to be wearing what could be an oversized set of deep dish Panasport rims, a true nod to Initial D.

Just like the Japanese cartoon show prompted Toyota to start selling twenty year old parts again and has made the rear wheel drive Corolla even more valuable today than it was off the showroom floor by breathing a breath of fresh air into the affordable and fun to drive new car segment. Our hope is that the production version of the FT-86 gives Hyundai’s Genesis Coupe a kick in the pants and gets American automakers back into the sport compact market, which has been empty since General Motors nixed the Pontiac Solstice and Saturn Sky from their lineup. Hopefully there is more than meets the eye to this red and black FT-86, but it is unlikely that we will find out until next year’s Tokyo Auto Salon, or an Initial D remake.

Toyota Sienna takes on a new sheet metal design

Toyota is hard at work on the next-generation Sienna minivan. While most of the sheet metal is from the current Sienna body, it has been heavily modified around the hood, front fender and the entire rear quarter panel. There is good reason for all this hacking; a new chassis is underneath. For the 2011 model year, the Sienna will join the Camry, Prius, RAV4, Venza and Highlander on Toyota’s ultra-flexible “MC” platform. While the final styling remains a mystery, some cues from the 2006 Toyota F3R concept may make it into production. Production of the 2011 Sienna will start in January at the Princeton, Ind., plant.

A supplier of traffic-surveillance cars to local authorities and police forces has started trialling Toyota iQs, with a view to replacing its current small-car fleet.

Capacity and reliability of the small three-door hatchbacks are key attractions for Traffic Enforcement Systems, of Pulloxhill in Bedfordshire. At present TES operates 45 Smart Cars, which are hired out to bodies responsible for traffic regulation and community safety. The vehicles are fitted with a range of mobile CCTV and GPS systems, and specialist equipment such as thermal-imaging cameras or numberplate-readers may also be fitted.

In search of a small car with greater payload and space, TES has now bought and fitted out a Toyota iQ 1.0-litre automatic as a customer demonstrator, and has just ordered a second vehicle. “We’re getting a lot of good reviews at the moment,” says Managing Director Clive Paul. “Manchester Police, for example, are very keen to take the prototype for a full trial, and if they like it they’ll switch to iQs. We have also shown it to Devon & Cornwall Police, who were very impressed and have been in contact with TES to arrange a long-term trial.”

“The most important thing about the iQ is that it can carry more weight,” says Mr Paul. “At present, when carrying all the equipment and two operators we’re right on the borderline. We‘ve been having to make everything with aluminium to reduce weight, which adds substantially to our costs.”

The iQ solves this problem, as its gross vehicle weight is 150kg higher at 1200kg. “Manchester Police say they like the idea of being able to carry two operators, because with all their body armour and so on, at present they can carry only one. Police officers also tend to be over 6ft tall, so they can often use only women officers in the cars. The iQ has loads more space than the Smart Car.”

Weight and space are not the only considerations. “It’s very important that we offer manoeuvrable small cars that can enforce traffic regulations without being an obstruction themselves,” says Mr Paul. “Also, councils are extremely eco-conscious.” The Toyota iQ 1.0-litre with multidrive returns 60mpg combined, with CO2 emissions of 110g/km. “We specify automatics because we have a lithium-ion battery in the back powered from the alternator, and the automatic has a larger alternator,” explains Mr Paul.

Surveillance and other equipment specified by customers can weigh around 60kg, and installation involves stripping out the car’s interior, including back seats, running in cabling, adding reinforcement for the roof-mast and installing a compressor. Fitting-out, which can take up to five weeks, is carried out at TES’s Pulloxhill base, as is routine servicing and maintenance of equipment. Maintenance and servicing of vehicles would be undertaken by Toyota.

With the reliability of modern camera systems, Clive Paul says that TES needs a car to match, to ensure that costly downtime is minimised. “Toyota has the reputation for reliability we need,” he says. TES replaces its vehicles over two to three years, with 10,000 as the standard mileage.

Toyota will make history by entering its 2010 Model Year Fifth Generation 4Runner in the internationally renowned SCORE Baja 1000. With over 672 miles in length and a time limit of 31 hours, the Baja 1000 is one of the toughest desert races in the world.
Over 325 entries are expected from around the world to compete in the 42nd Tecate SCORE Baja 1000 – the last desert race of the season scheduled for November 20-21, in Ensenada, Mexico.
Toyota will test its newest 4Runner and showcase the SUV’s capabilities and durability in the Mexican desert’s treacherous terrain. “Historically, only half of the racers finish this incredible test of man and machine, but we’re confident the Fifth Generation 4Runner will be a major contender in the stock mini class and can handle the grueling course”, said Les Unger, Toyota’s national motorsports manager.

One of the scheduled drivers will be the legendary Ivan “Ironman” Stewart – 22-time SCORE Baja race winner. Stewart has successfully conquered the toughest obstacles in off-road racing and was inducted into the Off-Road Motorsports Hall of Fame in 2006. “I’m thrilled to have been chosen to be one of the drivers to once again prove the toughness and durability of Toyota vehicles. I’m sure the Fifth Generation 4Runner will be tough enough to survive even my Iron foot”, said Stewart. Co-driving the 4Runner will be the teams of Bob Ditner/Zach Zwillinger from the start line to Borrego Junction, Ken Ziesemer/Mark Sasaki throughout the San Felipe loop, Joe Nolan/Paul Williamsen from Borrego to Valle De La Trinidad, and Ivan Stewart/Bob Ditner from Valle De La Trinidad to the finish line. The 4Runner will run on General Tires and utilize the famous Baja Pits Organization throughout the course.

The 2009 Baja 1000 will be a single loop race – starting and finishing in Ensenada on the Pacific Ocean side of the magnificent peninsula and run through Mexican villages — luring in tens of thousands of spectators.

The new Aygo Platinum is available in either three or five-door versions, both being powered by a 1.0-litre VVT-I petrol engine with Toyota Optimal Drive – winner of the sub-one-liter class of the International Engine of the Year awards for the past three years. Five-speed manual transmission is fitted as standard, with the option of Toyota’s Multimode system.

Toyota is also offering a new Aygo Xtra Protected pack for the new Platinum edition. The package adds: rear parking sensors and additional side and rear protection mouldings to help guard against the rough and tumble of urban driving. Vehicle Stability Control can also be specified as an option.

Prices start at £8995 for the Platinum edition and adds an extra £380 for the Aygo Xtra Protected pack.

Toyota Motor Sales (TMS) U.S.A., Inc. has partnered with the Surfrider Foundation to create a specially modified Camry Hybrid fueled by compressed natural gas (CNG), reflecting Toyota involvement with environmental awareness. The Toyota Surfrider Camry Hybrid CNG and two modified Prius gas-electric hybrid vehicles are on display in the Environmental Lifestyle Zone of the Toyota vehicle display at the 2009 SEMA Show. The Prius represents Toyota’s current commitment to the environment while the Camry Hybrid CNG pushes the envelope on alternative fuel possibilities.

The current benefits of CNG are amplified by rapidly changing market conditions and an increase in consumer environmental awareness. As a transport fuel, natural gas is a clean and safe gasoline alternative. It can potentially reduce U.S. dependency on foreign oil and reduce vehicle operating costs. Currently, more than 99 percent of natural gas used in the U.S. comes from domestic and other American sources.

The CNG system was built by Metal Crafters of Fountain Valley, Calif. To convert the stock Camry Hybrid to a CNG vehicle, the gasoline fuel system was replaced with a CNG system in the spare tire well area.

The inside was modified with several enhancements, including a custom Grey Suede and Black leather upholstery, interior lighting and an enclosed trunk area with a viewing window to display the CNG fuel cylinders.

At the conclusion of the 2009 SEMA Show Toyota will provide a production version of the Surfrider Camry Hybrid CNG to the Surfrider Foundation. The vehicle will be driven to, and displayed at numerous outreach campaigns, education programs and beach cleanup events.

Toyota, the worldwide leader in hybrid sales and technology, is publicly debuting two uniquely modified Prius gas-electric hybrids at the 2009 SEMA Show. The Prius Aerius (Latin for “belonging to the air”) is a show car that integrates performance and design modifications with environmental elements, which embody the principals of sustainability. The Prius Aemulus (meaning “envious imitation”) is a drivable close replica of the Prius Aerius that has been donated to the Environmental Media Association (EMA) for a charity auction.

Built on two third-generation 2010 Prius, Five Axis Design created a four-piece Aero Kit using polyurethane and partially recycled materials manufactured by 3D Carbon. The kit includes a front lip spoiler, side skirts, and a rear lower valance. The Aero Kit was designed and aerodynamically tested by using state-of-the-art Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) software by Swift Engineering to ensure the kit maintained the Prius’ remarkable 0.25 coefficient of drag.

Nippon Color Design Studio America (CDSA) provided a custom paint to the exterior of both vehicles. CDSA used an environmentally-sensitive waterborne technology to produce a custom three-coat color using a blue-green Lumina pigment that resembles airiness and the color of the sky.

The Prius Aerius Show Car rides on Yokohama Super E-Spec™ low rolling resistance tires made from 80 percent non-petroleum materials and feature a special tread with leaf graphics. The special tires are mounted to unique Five Axis, FIVE:AD S6:F 19-inch wheels, with smooth, clear covers that reduce the coefficient of drag. The Prius Aemulus Auction Car rides on factory wheels with an exclusive art design that includes body color-keyed accents and a special two-tone treatment.

The side and rear glass on both vehicles receive a Crystalline Automotive Window Film, the latest in window film technology from 3M. The special window treatment increases passenger comfort and energy savings by blocking 99.9 percent of UV light and has a SPF rating equivalent to well over 1,000.

The Prius Aerius Show Car is installed with an interior seat fabric provided by True Textiles that is made from 100 percent consumer recycled polyester. Polyurethane produced by Ultrafabrics was provided for the design of the bolster and seatback. Ultrafabrics uses a polyurethane manufacturing process that captures and recycles over 99 percent of solvents used in production, leading to almost zero pollutants. Interior accents of the Prius Aerius are made from 3form’s eco-recycled resin, which is comprised of reclaimed birch trees and 40 percent post-industrial recycled content.

Audio entertainment in the Prius Aerius Show Car was provided by a Pioneer premium upgraded 900-watt 10 speaker audio system with two 10-inch subwoofers, 6.75-inch front and 5.25-inch rear component speakers and two Vizualogic 7-inch DVD headrest rear entertainment units. The Prius Aemulus Auction Car receives an upgraded Pioneer 700-watt nine speaker audio system featuring one 8-inch subwoofer and new 6.75-inch front and 5.25-inch rear component speakers.
The original seat materials removed from the Prius Aerius were recycled by Toyota to help make business cards and cosmetic cases with left over parts donated to local trades.

Both vehicles include a special Car Planet detailing kit featuring 100 percent eco-sensitive products, packaged in a bag made from leftover Show Car seat material.

The two special Prius vehicles were privately revealed at the EMA annual awards event on October 25 in Hollywood. The Prius Aemulus is currently being auctioned off as part of the EMA benefit online at CharityFolks.com/EMA.

The wrap incorporates a design in shades of pink, which includes swirling ribbons for movement, and flames to add an element of strength. The exterior wrap is complemented with a sport body kit, Toyota CAD roof end spoiler, and an Inalfa 845 Signature Series built-in sunroof, that features a one touch open and close illuminated switch that allows you to fully open, close, or vent the solar tinted glass panel, and convenient standard auto close. Toyota CAD supplied Pirelli PZero Nero tires and 18-inch maximum contrast wheels with machined and black finish to complete the exterior modifications.

The custom interior showcases Roadwire OEM Replacement Leather Interior and includes factory matching leather trim colors, as well as Alcantara, highlighted with custom embossments to match the interior and exterior graphics, and Toyota Yaris embroideries. Alcantara was used for custom seating trim, door panel inserts, and a complete headliner replacement. GGBailey.com provided custom carpeted floor mats featuring thickly serged edges and computer controlled embroidery depicting the Yaris name in pink, to complement the interior upholstery.

Ground Effects Limited further enhanced the interior by embellishing the door panels and center cluster with a pink lightening design using a seven-stage water-immersion image transfer process that instantly affixes any color, design, or pattern to a non-porous product. The pink lightening on the interior complements the exterior graphics theme and makes a statement that encompasses power, strength, and personalization.

Toyota CAD provided additional interior upgrades including an interior light kit, sport pedals, sport shift knob, and a Blu-Logic Bluetooth hands-free system. Performance modifications include an axle-back exhaust and a Fujita cold air intake system.

A premium audio/visual system was provided by Alpine Electronics of America, Inc. and allows the ultimate control of an iPod through a touch-screen control interface. West Coast Customs further enhanced the technology in the Hard Kandy Yaris by building a media center that dons an in-car computer and media management server provided by VMOD and a 7-inch LCD/TFT high resolution monitor provided by Vizualogic. This system is capable of getting 3G internet service allowing vehicle occupants the ability to stay connected to friends, family, and colleagues.

After its debut at the 2009 SEMA Show, the Hard Kandy Yaris will be used by Toyota, Alpine, and Roadwire for a variety of consumer and industry events.

The Toyota Tacoma All-Terrain Gamer (ATG) combines outdoor sports activities and video games to create the ultimate active lifestyle vehicle for young Tacoma pickup truck owners. The special vehicle was designed to take Tacoma owners to their favorite remote locations where they can pursue their passion for outdoor sports activities and also provide a haven at the end of the day to play their favorite interactive video games.

To create the Tacoma ATG Toyota Motor Sales (TMS), U.S.A., Inc. teamed up with a group of partners who are among the finest in their fields of expertise. The partners included The B.A.D. Company as the primary builder,along with Microsoft Xbox, Kicker, Toyota Racing Development, INNO Advanced Car Racks and Cannondale.

Toyota provided a 2009 Tacoma Double Cab Long Bed PreRunner V6 five-speed automatic to The B.A.D. Company to transform it into the rugged ATG. The builders felt this Tacoma configuration provided the best combination of on-road and off-road capability, a spacious cab to haul friends and a full-size bed to carry cargo and equipment.

The B.A.D. Company removed the B-Pillars and installed double gull-wing doors to increase space and create a “patio like” shelter for gamers. Adjustable theater style seating was created by removing the front seats and repositioning them to the outboard rear locations. This theater seating configuration intensifies gaming action by creating a communal experience, especially effective when playing Xbox’s new HALO ODST team oriented four-person video game. Large steps were created to allow easy ingress/egress and leg support for outboard chair gamers.

Four interior monitors were placed on two swing arms to allow the vehicle to be easily converted from a video haven to a drivable truck. The swing arms were designed and contoured to provide each game seat optimum screen distance and angled to maximize the high definition experience.

To increase storage capability an INNO Ridge Wide Cargo Box is attached to a roof mounted roll bar. Two Upright Lock Bike Racks mounted to truck base rack systems, each provided by INNO, are mated directly to the tonneau cover. The two Lock Bike Racks carry Cannondale RZ ONE Twenty and Cannondale Moto 4 high performance mountain bikes.

Exterior modifications also included three base colors of a custom metallic anthracite (pulled directly from the Xbox brand guide), drilled aluminum interior panels, color-matched protective floor coating, an acrylic hood with an engine view port, a 66-inch plasma monitor with a custom roll cage enclosure, tonneau cover with “Craze” paint technique, blacked out front grille, sponsor logo windshield sun shade, front and rear bumpers, smoked front head and rear tail lamp treatment, and Xbox graphics.

The Xbox gaming system in the Tacoma ATG is complemented by a two-channel custom Kicker audio system, providing the ultimate sound design to maximize the video game experience. The system generates a total of 2,150 watts of power from studio grade rack-mounted amps to minimize sound quality deterioration over extended use. Gamers will feel the action via the 1,500 watt 12-inch Kicker Solobaric L7-12 Subwoofer in a custom enclosure with vents at each corner directing air into the cab. Sound will rain down on gamers from eight Kicker QS65.2 6.5-inch mid-range speakers handling a combined 650 watts of power to complete the gaming experience.

Additional interior modifications include four Simpson custom upholstered off-road racing seats with four-point black racing harnesses, custom three-tone upholstered interior and a mini-fridge energy drink dispenser.

In addition to being the ultimate gaming vehicle the Tacoma ATG also needed to be able to transport outdoor enthusiasts to their favorite remote locations. Toyota Racing Development (TRD) contributed to the project with the installation of its 304 horsepower 4.0-liter Supercharger to increase vehicle torque and better traverse rugged landscape. TRD 16-inch bead lock wheels with BF Goodrich LT295/75R16 All-Terrain T/A tires were added to improve off-road stability and increase traction.

After its debut at the 2009 SEMA Show the Tacoma ATG is scheduled to be used by Toyota, Xbox, Kicker, and INNO for a variety of consumer and industry events.

The growing popularity of retro/old school hot rods in the aftermarket world has inspired Toyota to take a Texas-built Tundra Regular Cab full-size pickup and prove that a present day economical work truck could realistically be made into an American hot rod. Toyota also wanted to show consumers that Tundra is a truck that not only works hard, but plays hard too. The result is the Tundra Hot Rod, which takes a fun look at what a Toyota Tundra pickup truck might have looked like if it had been part of the iconic 1950s and ‘60s hot rod era.

Toyota assisted Phoenix-based project partner Sucker Punch Sally’s by providing a flat black Tundra Regular Cab 4×2 for the hot rod conversion. The exterior received candy red hotrod flames, Bonneville moon hubcaps, a custom 1950’s Toyota logo in the grille, and a custom cherry bomb exhaust.

Sucker Punch Sally’s also went old school inside with the installation of a full custom tuck ‘n’ roll interior. Additional interior modifications include a custom headliner, dash pad, and carpet along with hand-turned brass dashboard controls. The interior is topped off with a custom curly maple wood cargo deck.

Fender Guitars also made significant contributions to the project. Inside, the Tundra Hot Rod features Fender Guitar custom radio knobs and installed in the truck bed is a polished wood floor, using the Fender Custom Shop’s finest flamed maple. Sucker Punch Sally’s also added custom aluminum side panels and railing.

Toyota’s partnerships with Sucker Punch Sally’s and Fender Guitar will allow the Tundra Hot Rod to be seen beyond the 2009 SEMA Show by a wide range of audiences as the truck is scheduled to be displayed at a minimum of 55 various consumer events over the next year.

The Toyota/Billabong Ultimate Venza makes its debut at the 2009 SEMA Show. Toyota Motor Sales, USA, Inc. teamed with Billabong and Street Image to create the perfect active sports vehicle that you could take to the beach, lake, mountains, skate park or anywhere in between and have a blast. The Ultimate Venza will be used to support top extreme athletes at future competitions.

Modifying a Venza to meet the needs of extreme athletes was a natural fit. Its vast interior space, versatility, utility and comfort make it a perfect vehicle for people with active lifestyles.

Street Image built the Ultimate Venza by taking a 2009 Toyota Venza as the starting point. The exterior modification of the Ultimate Venza includes an aggressive custom body kit that includes a unique Toyota/Billabong exterior paint design, fender flares and alloy wheels. A custom roof rack was designed and installed to accommodate surf, snow and wake boards. The roof rack lowers to make it easier to load surf boards and also features a hidden cargo rack that extends from the rear bumper for skis and snow boards.

Street Image also installed a front and rear hitch receiver and Grinch Winch to pull wake boarders into waves or snow boarders and skaters across flat land to a jump or rail. Finally, large Enkei wheels with Nitto tires and a Toyota Racing Development (TRD) big brake kit were added to provide superior traction and stopping power when driving off the beaten path or to the beach.

The interior of the Ultimate Venza utilizes genuine Billabong materials and construction. The seats are custom upholstered with wet suit materials and incorporate Billabong’s latest design scheme and colors. The headliner is an artistic color collage depicting Billabong athletes in action.

Additional Ultimate Venza interior modifications include “living” features that will allow the athletes to conduct many everyday endeavors while on the go or at competition sites. Among the “living” features located in the rear cargo area is a custom heated shower system with a 10 gallon capacity for rinsing off after surfing.

A Verizon Wireless access point router was installed, allowing the athletes to receive up-to-date surf or snow reports and other important information. The Ultimate Venza was installed with the latest audio and video equipment from Fujitsu Ten’s legendary Eclipse brand. The system features a multi-media DVD head unit, iPod interface, head rest-mounted LCD monitors, 18 speakers and 2,200 watts of power. Rear hatch-mounted speakers allow for enhanced sound quality when relaxing during a post-competition tailgate gathering.

The Toyota/Billabong Ultimate Venza Concept will be the official Billabong Team vehicle for use by surf, snow, skate and wake athletes. It will also be used in the Billabong Adventure Division to tow personal watercraft during wave excursions and will be the official Billabong tow vehicle for their wake team. The one-of-a-kind Venza will also be displayed at Billabong surf contests and camps from coast to coast.

The Tacoma TX Package Concept was developed for the 2009 SEMA Show to gauge public reaction to its unique design themes and multiple performance modifications. The Tacoma TX is equipped with an impressive list of Toyota Racing Development (TRD) performance accessories and two unique graphics along each side of the truck. SEMA attendee reaction to the Tacoma TX will help enable Toyota to make necessary refinements and finalize a package available for Tacoma buyers in future model years.

Toyota used a 2010 Tacoma PreRunner SR5 as the base vehicle for the modification project. Newport Beach, Calif.-based advertising agency Blue C teamed up with Toyota to create the unique dual theme design. The driver side graphic, named Tacoma TX2, is an evolution of the current TRD design. Inspired by traditional TRD elements that convey the lifestyle of Tacoma owners, the design offers a new look and feel that is unique, yet maintains the TRD brand heritage.

The passenger side graphic design, called the TX Pro, conveys the energy of today’s youth. The design theme is inspired by travels to SCORE International, Vans Warp Tours, Coachella Music Festival and SuperCross events. The “Pro” designation gives a nod to those who are passionately involved in the high-energy action sports scene.

TOYOTA MOTOR CORPORATION (TMC) announces the unveiling today in Japan of the compact luxury sedan “Sai”, which is planned to go on sale in Japan on December 7.
The Sai is based on a concept derived from the Japanese word sai—which means “talent” when written as “sai” and “coloration” when written as “sai”—as a hybrid-only sedan “combining advanced talent and multi-color sophistication”.

The Sai, designed with extensive consideration for the environment, features a gasoline-electric hybrid system with a 2.4-liter engine for outstanding fuel efficiency and use of Ecological Plastic (made from plant-derived materials) for approximately 60% of the interior surface area. Its highly efficient package achieves an outstanding balance between maneuverability, comfort, refined sedan styling and aerodynamic performance. Furthermore, in addition to offering advanced features for high-level safety performance, such as a millimeter-wave-radar Pre-crash Safety system, the Sai, among its other attributes, provides cruising performance and riding comfort befitting a luxury vehicle, altogether making it a compact luxury vehicle for a new era that brings together “talent” and “coloration” to enrich customers’ lifestyles.

Outstanding fuel efficiency and environmental performance

The Sai features the Toyota Hybrid System (THS) II combining a 2.4-liter Atkinson cycle combustion engine with an electric motor and a reduction gear. By delaying intake valve closure, the engine achieves a high expansion ratio at low pressure, thus raising heat efficiency.

• Possessing dynamic performance with power to spare, vehicle realizes fuel efficiency of 23.0km/l—on par with 660cc minivehicles—under 10-15 test cycle of Japanese Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT); under MLIT’s JC08 test cycle, vehicle has fuel efficiency of 19.8km/l
• Vehicle meets new 2015 Japanese fuel efficiency standards set out under Law Concerning Rational Use of Energy, and CO2 emissions are 75% lower than 2005 standards under MLIT approval system for low-emission vehicles, which is currently strictest standard in Japan for emissions; thus, vehicle qualifies for Japanese government tax reductions and subsidies for environmentally friendly vehicles

The transaxle is exceptionally small and light, with a compact high-speed motor that achieves increased output and a reduction gear that increases torque.

An exhaust heat recovery system uses exhaust gas to heat the engine, thus shortening engine-warming time and contributing to greatly improved fuel efficiency, especially when outside temperatures are low.
LED headlights conserve electric power and consequently reduce power-generation requirements on the engine.

In addition to Standard Driving Mode, which balances fuel efficiency and power, drivers can also select Eco-Drive Mode, which prioritizes fuel efficiency by moderating driving force relative to accelerator operation and putting the air conditioner into a low energy-consumption mode, and Electric Vehicle (EV) Drive Mode, which uses the electric motor only, resulting in extremely quite cruising and zero emissions.

A Hybrid System Indicator that shows real-time driving status and an Eco Driving Indicator that lights up to signify fuel-efficient vehicle operation provide visual support to the driver.

Environmental impact reduction

To limit CO2 emissions through achieving carbon neutrality2 and to minimize use of Earth’s limited fossil fuels, plant-based Ecological Plastic has been used for approximately 60% of the interior surface area—by far the greatest use of such plastic by TMC in any vehicle to date.

Toyota Motor Corporation (TMC) has positioned a plug-in hybrid vehicle (PHV) as the ideal environmentally-considerate vehicle best suited for widespread use given its responses to the diversification of energy sources at present.
The PRIUS PLUG-IN HYBRID Concept is the first Toyota vehicle brand that uses a lithium-ion battery as the drive battery. It is a PHV concept model that can be charged from an external power source such as household electricity.
Since PRIUS PLUG-IN HYBRID Concept has a lithium-ion drive battery, charging to many times higher than a nickel-metal hydride battery is possible. As a result, the cruising range in electric vehicle mode is longer than that of a Prius with a nickel-metal hydride battery. The fuel efficiency of the third-generation Prius is 38km/l, and that of the PRIUS PLUG-IN HYBRID Concept is at least 55km/l (target). Charged from an external power source such as a household electrical outlet, it extends the cruising range in electric vehicle mode, maximizing the benefits as an environmentally-considerate vehicle. As the cruising distance as an electric vehicle increases, environmental benefits that surpass those even of the regular Prius can be expected including lower CO2 emissions and air pollution and reduced consumption of fossil fuels.

Approximate charging times using ordinary household electricity are 180 minutes at 100V and 100 minutes at 200V. TMC set a minimum electric vehicle (EV) cruising range target of at least 20km on a full charge. Enabling the vehicle to be recharged externally allows it to operate as an EV for short trips and as a hybrid vehicle (HV) for longer ones. In other words, the PRIUS PLUG-IN HYBRID Concept is the ideal combination of an EV and a HV.

TMC plans to participate in the EV & PHV Towns program sponsored by the Japanese Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry to encourage the widespread use of EVs and PHVs, and the PRIUS PLUG-IN HYBRID Concept brings TMC one step closer to the ultimate environmentally-considerate vehicle.

TMC seeks to develop the ultimate earth-conscious environmentally-considerate vehicle with a focus on hybrid technologies without losing sight of the appeal of cars themselves or the joy of driving.

Over the past several years, the need has been rising for motor vehicles that take into consideration global warming and other environmental issues, while there has also been concern that there have been too few new sports cars that make the heart beat faster and that the time is right for a new generation of sports cars. In response to these needs, TMC has developed the FT-86 Concept, a sports car equipped with a 2,000cc, horizontally opposed, four-cylinder, naturally-aspirated gasoline engine that evokes the joy of driving a car and the pleasure of vehicle ownership.

As the name “Future Toyota 86 Concept” implies, the FT-86 Concept, which will be exhibited at the 2009 Tokyo Motor Show, is a new 86 Toyota with a flash red finish. It is a compact, rear-wheel drive sports concept car that embodies speed and the excitement of driving that give cars their appeal as well as environmental performance.

A Toyota Sports Car for a New Era when the Driver Plays the Main Role

While for the 2010 Toyota Camry SE which came with with the same engine, has been tuned to make the car delivers 179 hp. To increase the performance, the 2010 Toyota Camry will also be available with a 3.5-liter V6 engine that may develops 268 hp.
Toyota Camry (2010) exterior design comes equipped with re-styled tail lights, larger headlamps, 16-inch alloy wheels, a lower intake, and also a new front bumper and grille.

Toyota Camry (2010) will put on sale on March this year, and the price for the 2010 Toyota Camry will be announced shortly before it goes on sale.

The 2010 Camry is on display for the first time today at the North American International Auto Show (NAIAS). As the best-selling passenger car in America for seven years running and 11 of the past 12 years, Camry continues to redefine standards for comfort and performance.

The 2010 Camry and Camry Hybrid scheduled to go on sale in March, have an array of enhancements, inside and out, including exterior styling, performance, safety, audio and convenience features.

Camry also has an upgraded standard powertrain for 2010. A new 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine equipped with variable valve timing with intelligence (VVT-i) will produce 169 hp for Camry, LE and XLE grades. For sporty performance, SE grade get additional tuning and gets 179 horsepower, 21 more horsepower than the previous four-cylinder engine. The new engine can be combined with a six-speed manual transmission or a six-speed automatic transmission with sequential shift. A powerful 3.5-liter V6 delivering 268 horsepower is also available.

Exterior changes to the gas model Camry include a newly designed grille and front bumper, an enlarged lower intake, larger projector headlamps and restyled tail lamps. The Camry and LE grades feature restyled standard wheel covers. The XLE grade will run on new 16-inch 10-spoke alloy wheels, while the SE grade adds new 17-inch sporty alloy wheels.

The Camry Hybrid exterior enhancements will include a unique hybrid grille, a distinct front bumper, a wider lower intake, restyled fog lights and 16-inch alloy wheels.

The Camry Hybrid, equipped with Toyota’s industry-leading Hybrid Synergy Drive, certified as an Advanced Technology Partial Zero Emissions Vehicle (AT-PZEV) is just one of a handful of cars that meets this strict standard, producing over 70 percent less smog-forming emissions than the average new car.

Inside, Camry and LE grades are available with an optional audio system equipped with a new USB port for auxiliary music sources, Bluetooth, integrated satellite radio, single-CD, and MP3 and streaming music capability. Previously an option, all Camry gas models will now be equipped with Vehicle Stability Control with traction control. Auto up/down power windows with jam protection on all four doors is standard equipment. Camry Hybrid adds a newly designed meter cluster and Fraichir, a combination of silk protein and synthetic fiber, cloth seating surfaces that are gentle to the skin.

Pricing for the 2010 Camry will be announced shortly before it goes on sale this March.

When the first Toyota 4Runner sport utility vehicle (SUV) was launched back in 1984 it was a revolutionary new vehicle based on the mechanics of the four-wheel-drive Toyota pickup truck. The 4Runner combined the versatility and go-anywhere ability of four-wheel-drive with the comfort and utility found in passenger cars.

Twenty-five years, four generations and more than 1.5 million sales later, the 4Runner continues to evolve while remaining close to its roots. The all-new fifth-generation 4Runner is even more rugged and athletic, and packed with more power and better mileage. A completely redesigned interior and unique cargo area make the newest 4Runner smarter, more comfortable, and more versatile than ever.

“Backed by a quarter-century of heritage combined with the integration of the latest comfort, convenience and performance technologies, the all-new fifth-generation 4Runner has evolved into one of the most advanced mid-sized truck-based SUV’s on the market while at the same time staying true to its roots as a rugged and durable off-roader,” said Bob Carter, group vice president and general manager of Toyota Division.

More rugged than the Highlander and more versatile than the FJ Cruiser, the 4Runner combines the toughness and durability of body-on-frame construction with multi-use design that excels at a wide variety of tasks.

The newest 4Runner is taller, wider and longer for 2010, and is available in a variety of configurations. It will be offered in three models, top-of-the-line Limited, a well-equipped SR5, plus a Trail grade for those who require maximum off-road capability.

Drivetrain configurations include rear wheel 4×2, part-time 4×4 and full-time multi-mode 4×4 with a locking center differential. All 4×4 models are equipped with a 4.0-liter V6 mated to a five-speed ECT-i automatic transmission. The 4×2 models will be equipped with either a 2.7-liter four-cylinder engine mated to a four-speed ECT automatic or the 4.0-liter V6 with the five-speed ECT-i automatic. Optional third-row seats allow for up to seven-person capacity.

Exterior Styling

The design strategy for the new 4Runner emphasizes a more rugged, powerful stance. Large diameter wheels and tires were added to not only improve off-road performance, but also enhance the 4Runner’s truck-based characteristics. In addition to its styling emphasis on ruggedness and outdoor adventure, the new design utilizes a combination of Toyota’s classic boxy form and progressive styling.

All 4Runner grades feature rugged new bumpers and wider shoulders, with newly designed head- lamp and tail-light systems, which offer a newly-minted, technical design quality and better nighttime performance. The front ends square fender flares meld with a muscular profile that links with a beefy and square rear bumper and back door.

Aluminum alloy wheels are 17-inches in diameter on SR5 and Trail grades and 20-inches on the Limited, and include a full size spare.

In addition to its distinctive front grille, the SR5 grade also adopts overfenders and mud guards to help tackle inclement weather and off-road conditions. A roof rack comes standard for hauling equipment for outdoor activities.

The Trail grade is designed to maximize off-road performance with a superior approach and departure angles, high ground clearance, and an array of functional upgrades for the most demanding active outdoor enthusiast. It can be distinguished by a unique hood scoop, unique 17-inch wheels, black outer mirrors, front and rear bumper guards and dark smoke treatment on the head and tail lamps.

The Limited and SR5 grades add to the muscular design with special touches that provide a premium appearance. The front end includes a chrome-plated front grille insert, fog lamp bezel and front bumper molding. Front and rear overfenders and side skirts are color-keyed. Chrome plating is also found on the side molding, roof rack and rear bumper.

Turn signals on SR5 and Limited V6 grades are now incorporated into the outside mirrors, along with puddle lamps.

4Runner is available in six exterior colors. Three new colors, Shoreline Blue Pearl, Magnetic Gray Metallic and Classic Silver Metallic, join carryovers Blizzard Pearl, Salsa Red Pearl and Black.

New Engine Choices

The 2010 4Runner is powered by a new 4.0-liter V6, which now generates 270 horsepower and 278 lb-ft of torque. Through the use of advanced engine management that includes dual independent Variable Valve Timing with intelligence (VVT-i), the new 4.0-liter engine offers the best of both worlds, adding more power while improving efficiency. For 2010, the new V6 engine produces 34 horsepower more than the prior V6, and 10 horsepower more than the optional V8 of the previous generation.

Additional mileage improvements have come from careful attention to wind flow, reducing aerodynamic drag to a Cd of 0.365. EPA-estimated mileage improves from 16 city and 21 highway to 17 city/23 highway for the 4×2, and from 16 city and 20 highway to 17 city/22 highway for 4×4 models. Both achieve an EPA-estimated 19 mpg combined, an improvement of more than five percent. With the new 4.0-liter engine, maximum towing capacity is 5,000 pounds.

In addition to the upgraded V6 engine, a proven 2.7-liter four-cylinder engine with VVT-i is available on the 4×2 SR5 model. The gutsy DOHC, 16-valve 2.7 makes 157 horsepower and 178 lb-ft of torque. Mated to a four-speed automatic transmission with 2.80:1 first gear and 0.753 overdrive 4th, the 2.7 delivers 18 city/23 highway mpg.

4×4 Capability Designed-In

To build on its tradition of rugged body-on-frame construction, the newest 4Runner shares the same platform as the FJ Cruiser. Extensive frame and body reinforcements have been added, using high-tensile materials to add strength without adding weight. SR5 and Trail 4×4 models have a two-speed lever-operated, part-time system with neutral position, while the 4Runner Limited is equipped with full-time, four-wheel-drive with a locking center differential and employs a three-mode, center console-mounted switch. The new 4Runner is also equipped with a stronger rear differential over the previous model, thanks to a gear ring that has increased in size from 7.87 to 8.18 inches.

To enhance grip, the A-TRAC system is now standard equipment on all 4×4 models. The system can distribute driving force to any one wheel in contact with the ground, making terrain irregularities and slippery patches transparent to the driver. An electronic-locking rear differential is standard on the Trail grade. Axles house 3.73 gears, or 4.56:1 with the 2.7-liter engine and the differential housings have improved seals for better resistance to mud and water.

An array of advanced features, formerly only available in the Land Cruiser, further boosts off-highway capabilities. The Trail grade offers Toyota’s Kinetic Dynamic Suspension System (KDSS) as an option. KDSS radically improves terrain-following ability by disconnecting stabilizer bars to allow for more axle travel, and better suspension articulation in slow, difficult terrain. Toyota’s Crawl Control (CRAWL) feature is standard on the Trail grade. CRAWL is an adjustable electro-mechanical system that can be tuned to match the terrain by selecting any of five speed levels. The system maintains an appropriate speed that keeps the vehicle under control and minimizes the load on drivetrain and suspension components. The CRAWL feature helps make traversing difficult terrain easier and safer. With the transfer case shifted into low range, Crawl Control regulates engine speed and output (along with braking force), to propel the vehicle forward or in reverse at one of the five low-speed settings. This allows the driver to maintain focus while steering over very rough level ground or steep grades, without having to also modulate the throttle, or brake, pedals.

The Trail grade also features a Multi-Terrain Select system which allows the 4×4 operator to dial in wheel slip control to match the terrain. In loose terrain such as mud and sand, more-than-normal wheel slip is permitted, allowing wheel-spin to work in the vehicle’s favor. On bumpy moguls, or solid rock, wheel slip is minimized and the system acts more like a limited slip. The Mogul setting is for any extremely uneven terrain, such as V-ditches, slopes, and ridges, uphill or down.

All 4Runner 4×4 models are standard-equipped with Downhill Assist Control (DAC), which is designed to augment the low-speed ascending ability of low-range by holding the vehicle to a target speed with no driver intervention. All V6 4Runner models come standard with Hill-start Assist Control (HAC), which provides additional control for off-road driving by helping to keep the vehicle stationary while starting on a steep incline or slippery surface.

On-Road Driving Dynamics

The new 4Runner may be a truck-based SUV, but it offers the kind of drivability and riding comfort more often associated with car-based platforms.

Coil springs over gas shocks are used at all four corners for a comfortable ride and controlled handling. A double-wishbone independent front suspension, combined with new, variable-flow rack and pinion steering, makes for precise control on demanding roadways. The four-link rear suspension minimizes rear axle hop and assures a smooth ride for back seat passengers.
The Limited grade comes standard with an X-REAS suspension system that further improves performance, comfort and control. X-REAS automatically adjusts the damping force of shocks when driving over bumpy surfaces, or when cornering. The system uses a center control absorber to cross-link shocks on opposite corners of the vehicle, substantially reducing pitch and yaw by offsetting opposing inputs. With X-REAS the new 4Runner corners flatter, smoother, and handles choppy pavement more easily.

Every Safety Precaution Considered

On-road vehicle dynamics are further enhanced by a suite of high-performance, state-of-the-art safety systems. Standard on 4Runner is Toyota’s Star Safety System™, which includes Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) with traction control (TRAC), an Anti-Lock Brake System with Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD) and Brake Assist. Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) helps to ensure stability by compensating for oversteer or understeer. The system uses selective braking and modulated engine output to keep the vehicle in line with the driver’s intended course. On 4×2 vehicles, the Auto LSD (Limited Slip Differential) system allows for better traction on slippery sections of roadway.

The four-wheel ABS with EBD provides the 4Runner anti-lock stopping control with optimal brake proportioning, whether the vehicle is loaded or unloaded. Hill-start Assist Control (HAC), standard on all 4×4 models and the 4×2 V6, suppresses backward roll when switching from brake to accelerator. All 2010 4Runners have active headrests for driver and passenger, three-point seat belts for all seats, an energy-absorbing body structure and an energy-absorbing hood to help protect pedestrians.

Two customised iQ show cars demonstrate that it is possible to combine the environmentally friendly credentials of sub- 100 g/km vehicles with tremendous appeal and individuality. Within a white pearl bodyshell enhanced by a fully glazed roof, the iQ Collection focuses on interior customisation. It explores synergies between interior and exterior design through the adoption of white pearl detailing to key areas of trim throughout the interior, such as the centre console, instrument binnacle and door panels. Complimentary leather upholstery combines matching white piping with a show car-unique central panel design.

Both three and five door versions of the all-new Toyota Land Cruiser are available with a choice of two engines: a 205 kW/249 DIN hp 4.0 litre Dual VVT-i V6 petrol engine or a 127 kW/173 DIN hp 3.0 litre four-cylinder turbodiesel. The CO2 emissions of both engines have been reduced by 12 %, and the turbodiesel returns a best in class fuel consumption of 8.1 l/100 km, and CO2 emissions of 214 g/km in the combined
cycle.

The rigidity of the all-new Land Cruiser’s highly durable body-onframe construction has been increased by 11%, and insulating frame-to-body mounts both absorb engine, drivetrain and road noise, while enhancing road comfort.

The front independent double wishbone and rear 4-link lateral rod suspension has been extensively revised to improve both ride comfort and steering feel. It is equipped with a new, electronically modulated Kinetic Dynamic Suspension System (KDSS), which optimises the effect of the front and rear stabilisers for enhanced performance both on and off road.

An Adaptive Variable Suspension (AVS) system incorporating Roll Posture Control allows the driver to fine tune the all-new Land Cruiser’s ride characteristics with a choice of three damper settings. In conjunction with AVS, an electronically modulated rear air suspension system maintains optimum control of the rear suspension. Including an Auto Levelling function and a switchable Height Control function, the system also excels at absorbing high frequency vibrations to reduce road-generated NVH.

The four modes of Multi-terrain Select offers optimal driving support by automatically controlling power output and braking input depending on driving terrain. At the same time, a fourcamera Multi-terrain Monitor and a Steering Angle Display increase the driver’s awareness of his/her immediate surroundings and intended path.

Crawl Control with five different speed settings allows the driver to negotiate even the most extreme obstacles with maximum precision and control, without hitting the throttle or brake pedals. The system will also help drivers free the vehicle when stuck in deep sand or mud.

On board, both three- and five-door versions of the all-new Land Cruiser feature more refined and spacious cabin. Seven seat versions now feature second row seats with a 135 mm sliding range, a more flexible, 40:20:40 split/folding/reclining seat back, and a walk-in, slide and tilt function for third row access. The optional third row features two proper seats with integral headrests, which fold completely flat into the loadspace floor. The footwell floor has been lowered by over 38 mm for a more comfortable seating position, and the sliding second row seat function offers more than double the third row legroom of the current model.

Left and right hand seats may be raised and lowered independently, and an optional power function allows this to be done at the touch of a button. Controls are mounted both inside the tailgate and behind the second row seats on the passenger side.

The total flexibility of this three-tier seating is complimented by numerous practical storage spaces including a USB port compartment for the connection and simultaneous charging of iPods, and a large centre console box which may be equipped with a compact refrigeration unit.

The Land Cruiser’s all-new premium interior further benefits from a range of high-technology, intuitive, user-friendly systems designed to simplify and enhance life on board. The new Toyota Auris HSD Full Hybrid Concept, presented publicly for the first time at the Frankfurt motor show, marks a significant milestone in Toyota’s plan to equip its mainstream European models with full hybrid technology. Toyota is committed to making the environmental benefits of its Hybrid Synergy Drive (HSD) accessible to a wider customer base and it is on track to offer a hybrid version of every model in its range by the early 2020s.

A five door hatchback is the best selling type of car in Europe and consequently the installation of HSD in Auris is the logical first step in deploying full hybrid technology across Toyota’s entire European model line-up.

By introducing the Toyota Auris HSD Full Hybrid Concept, Toyota also aims to shift customer perceptions of hybrid technology. The obvious advantages are exceptional fuel efficiency and low CO2 emissions, but customers will also experience smooth and sophisticated driving unlike any other family hatchback, thanks to the everyday usability, comfort and quietness of the Toyota full hybrid powertrain.

The Toyota Auris HSD Full Hybrid will be built by Toyota Motor Manufacturing UK (TMUK) at the Burnaston factory, near Derby, with sales scheduled to start during the second half of 2010.

The news that Europe’s first hybrid production model will be built in the UK has been welcomed by the British Government. Business Secretary Lord Mandelson said: “I’m delighted Toyota has chosen the UK to build its first hybrid vehicle in Europe. When I visited the Burnaston plant in July, I saw for myself the energy and commitment of Toyota and its workers. The unveiling of the new car at the Frankfurt Motor Show brings the vision of making the UK the best place in the world to develop low carbon vehicles a step closer. I look forward to seeing the cars roll off the line next year.”

Exterior design

The design of the Toyota Auris HSD Full Hybrid Concept reflects the installation of a full hybrid powertrain in a mainstream package. Subtle changes have been made to Auris’s styling to improve aerodynamic efficiency and blue hybrid badging identifies the car as a member of Toyota’s full hybrid fleet.

The front end is designed to optimise airflow and so help maximise fuel efficiency. The front and rear bumper corners have flat surfaces, a feature that not only accentuates the car’s wide and solid stance, but also smoothes the flow of air over the vehicle’s flanks, minimising turbulence and drag.

The ride height is lower by 20mm compared to the conventional Auris, and underbody panels and a rear diffuser have been fitted to smooth and control airflow beneath the car. The bespoke 18-inch alloy wheels are designed to cut air turbulence in the wheel arches and are shod with low rolling resistance tyres. A larger, more efficient rear spoiler is also fitted. These aerodynamic elements target a drag coefficient of 0.28.

Interior design

The cabin has a number of special features that are linked to the car’s full hybrid status.

The seats and upper dashboard are finished in blue Gaucholino leather with light blue accent stitching. To complement the exterior body colour, the centre console and side air vents have a tactile, pearl white finish.

The instrument cluster has hybrid blue illumination, with a design that combines high technology with easy-to-read displays. Alloy pedals reinforce the performance dimension of HSD technology and the steering wheel has a flat bottom section for easy driver access and better legroom.

Sequenced entry and exit lighting is provided, including puddle lights integrated in the door mirrors and ambient illumination of the footwells and headlining. Thick carpeting raises the on-board comfort and refinement levels and also contributes to a marked improvement in cabin quietness.

Refined driving experience

Using the same powertrain as the latest generation Prius, the Toyota Auris HSD Full Hybrid Concept is the first mainstream model in Europe to benefit from Toyota’s refined, smooth and quiet Hybrid Synergy Drive.

The car will accelerate from nought to 62mph in around 10 seconds, while returning class-leading combined cycle fuel economy and sub-100g/km CO2 emissions. It offers four driving modes, three of which can be selected on-demand by the driver: ECO mode maximises hybrid system efficiency and fuel economy; Power mode boosts performance; and EV mode – a feature only available with a full hybrid system – allows for ultra-quiet running on electric motor power alone for up to 1.25 miles (2km) at speeds up to 31mph, with zero fuel consumption and zero CO2 and particulates (PM) emissions.

Building on the inherent quietness of HSD, particular attention has been paid to further NVH reduction measures to achieve a calm, quiet cabin environment at all speeds. Road and engine noise have been suppressed by comprehensive use of soundproofing materials, and full thickness glazing and an acoustic windscreen reduce wind noise at cruising speeds.

Environmentally efficient technology

Using technology that was first brought to the market in the latest generation Prius, the Toyota Auris HSD Full Hybrid Concept marks a further development of solar powered ventilation, with solar panels covering the entire roof.

Similar technology is used inside the cabin, with solar panels on top of the dashboard that generate sufficient energy to recharge mobile phones or portable music plays mounted in purpose-designed charging trays. In the future, Toyota aims to advance this technology to provide solar powered recharging of the hybrid battery.

Further energy-saving measures include the use of LED technology for the front and rear lights.

The Toyota Venza is the definition of a crossover; it’s big, but not too large, it rides a little lower to the ground than an SUV or minivan and it looks somewhat sporty thanks to touches like the bright Barcelona Red paint work, rear spoiler and 20 inch wheels. The front end of the Venza is interesting to say the least, the wide grill and stretched projector headlamps when combined with the low roofline give the people mover a very squatty stance. The Venza truly is a large vehicle but because it is not so tall our Toyota was clearly something different than the previous Previa, a much sportier and more compact multi-people mover.

The Venza that Toyota provided us with was dressed up nicely with chrome accents on the grille, door handles and window frame while brushed aluminum was reserved for the roof rails. This well equipped Venza also came with a set of high intensity discharge light bulbs to replace the standard halogen ones. Don’t be fooled by the utilitarian nature of this chopped and stretched RX, the design team snuck in a few hidden speed inspired shapes that could be getting consumer’s eyes ready for a future super car. As soon as our editorial staff saw the taillight housings on the Venza, we knew that shape from somewhere, a Lexus perhaps. However no luxury badged Toyota has a housing that resembles the Venza’s bolted to their rear. If you look at a Lexus LF-A, you will notice a sort of spike that comes off allowing for a piece of the body work to become a more integral part of the unit. Well if you turn it upside down, fatten it up and paint half of it red; you have a Venza taillight.

The interior of our Toyota Venza was spacious and luxurious; the designers chose an excellent combination of warm tones for the dash and seats that when combined with the very elegant wood trim and soft materials made us wonder why it wasn’t wearing a Lexus badge. One of the first things that you will notice after you settle into the comfortable leather seats is that like most modern Toyota’s, the Venza features a pair of LCD displays on the dash. There is the traditional larger screen incorporated into the center stack which is complimented by a smaller 3.5 inch Multi Display that shows the settings for the dual zone climate control, fuel economy and a few other helpful facts for the driver. Meanwhile the larger LCD displays everything from audio settings to navigation. The Venza also came equipped with a very attractive instrument cluster and an easy to use dual zone climate controller.

The Venza offers seating for 5 and has more than enough cup holders to allow a few passengers to enjoy multiple beverages. There is also plenty of rather large storage compartments that conveniently let you stow away your goods. The Venza shines when it comes to cargo capacity, offering over 30 cubic feet of available space behind the rear seats and over 70 cubic feet when they are laid flat; there is even a 110 Volt outlet and audio/video inputs so you can play some video games while camped out in back of the Toyota. There was also a very convenient flip down monitor complete with remote control and wireless headphones that can keep the backseat occupants quiet on road trips for 90 minutes at a time.

Our well-equipped Venza came with the Premium Package #2, at $4,345 it seems like a lot of money and that is because it is, but what you get is well worth it. The upgrade starts off with a few more leather wrapped surfaces like the power adjustable seats, tilt/telescope steering wheel and shift knob. The next item on the list is the Satin Mahogany wood grain trim pieces that add a whole new level of sophistication to the Venza. The Premium Package also adds the HIDs and chrome door handles to the exterior of the vehicle, so the money is well spent everywhere. The Venza also came equipped with a $2,590 Voice activated DVD based Navigation unit that brought along an in dash CD changer, AM/FM/XM/MP3 capabilities and hands free Bluetooth connectivity.

You will never feel underpowered in the Toyota Venza that is because there is enough torque coming from the 3.5 Liter 24 valve VVT-i V6 to break the large 20 inch tires loose on even the driest of days and highway overtaking will be no problem at all thanks to the 268 HP and 246 lb-ft of torque while consuming just MPG in the city and 29 MPG at higher cruising speeds.

Although he Venza is not a light vehicle weighing in at around 3,800 pounds, nonetheless the sporty exterior was complimented by a sporty ride. Not only did the Venza have plenty of get up and go in a straight line, the low profile 20 inch tires helped it to go around turns with a bit more enthusiasm, making the Venza feel like a much smaller vehicle.

Global automotive giant Toyota Motor Corp. has confirmed the arrival of the new Prius in India. The largest selling hybrid across the world is slated for a launch in the first quarter of 2010. Toyota Motor Corp. is not targeting to sell huge volumes of the car. It is launching the car only to show the prowess of its vehicle as a platform to showcase its advancement in hybrid technology.

Toyota’s rapidly expanding UK model line-up gains another new member this week with the sales launch of new Verso, bringing more style, space, safety and advanced equipment features to the compact MPV segment.

The third generation of the seven-seat Verso has a new look inside and out and translates larger external and wheelbase dimensions into added comfort for those on board, particularly for rear seat passengers who have significantly more head and legroom. There is also substantially more load space, even with all three rows of seats in place.

Shifting the balance between seat and storage space is easier than ever before, thanks to an improved version of Toyota’s Easy Flat-7 system, making flat-folding of each rear seat a simple one-touch operation.

In common with all new Toyota models, new Verso benefits from Toyota Optimal Drive powertrains across the entire range, giving stronger performance but lower emissions and improved economy compared to the previous model. The new 1.8-Valvematic petrol engine, available with a new six-speed manual gearbox or Multimode S CVT system, musters an additional 18bhp compared to the 1.8 VVT-i unit it replaces, while bringing CO2 emissions down by 19g/km to 165g/km (manual) and gaining an extra 3.7 miles from a gallon of fuel with an official 40.4mpg in combined cycle driving.

The 125bhp (126 DIN hp) 2.0-litre D-4D engine has been revised with new piezo-electric injectors and higher injection pressure, helping achieve higher torque performance and lower emissions. A 2.2-litre D-CAT 150 engine with Toyota’s four-way DPNR clean diesel catalyst system will join the range later this year, offered with a new six-speed automatic transmission.

New Verso is available in a three-grade model range: T2, TR and T Spirit. T2 models come equipped with five airbags (including curtain airbags protecting all three rows of seats), air conditioning, four-speaker audio with steering wheel-mounted controls, Easy Flat-7 folding rear seats, electrically adjustable heated door mirrors, electric front windows and body coloured bumpers and doorhandles.

TR grade, which will account for around 73 per cent of sales, includes Bluetooth, an Aux-in socket for connecting personal music players, additional driver and front passenger side airbags, leather steering wheel and gear knob trim, electric rear windows, front foglights and 16-inch alloy wheels.

T Spirit models gain premium features such as climate control, automatic windscreen wipers and headlights, Smart Entry and Start, cruise control and 17-inch alloys. The auto-dimming rear view mirror includes an integrated display which shows real-time images relayed from the car’s rear parking camera.

Key options include a panoramic sunroof, leather upholstery and two satellite navigation systems. TR models can be specified with a DVD-based system with Bluetooth, while T Spirit versions can be equipped with hard disk drive (HDD) system with a seven-inch colour touch-screen display. The HDD also provides a music storage function, so owners can create their personal on-board juke box.

Developed locally by Toyota Style Australia, the HC-CV (Hybrid Camry Concept Vehicle) had its world premiere ahead of the 2009 Melbourne International Motor Show.

The unveiling of the concept car marks the start of a 12-month countdown to the launch of Australia’s first locally produced hybrid car, based on the best-selling Camry sedan.

Toyota Australia president and chief executive officer Max Yasuda said the concept car was the most important vehicle on the company’s motor show stand.
“The startling paintwork, dramatic lines and sporty appearance of this concept car convey the excitement and passion in our company to produce Australia’s first hybrid car,” Mr Yasuda said.
“The hybrid Camry – which will share some key design features with the HC-CV – will play a key role in bringing the future to the Australian automotive manufacturing sector.
“It is a future that uses less fuel while delivering better performance.”

The hybrid Camry uses a four-cylinder petrol engine linked to a powerful electric motor.

It produces more power than a conventional petrol-engine vehicle while delivering better fuel economy.

Mr Yasuda said many industry commentators were urging carmakers to produce more fuel-efficient cars.

“Toyota is already the only local manufacturer producing a four-cylinder car in this country. We have been building Camry in this country – in Melbourne – for nearly 22 years.

“It’s been Australia’s best-selling medium car for 15 years – and it’s our leading automotive export.

“Toyota also produces the most fuel-efficient Australian-made large six-cylinder sedan, the Aurion, in Melbourne.

“Our locally manufactured hybrid Camry will be launched early next year.”

Contemporary hybrid design

Toyota Style Australia corporate manager Paul Beranger said Toyota has evolved the styling of its hybrid vehicles since the late 1990s.

“HC-CV is our expression of the contemporary hybrid sedan,” he said.

The front of the car is characterised by expressive, sharp lines and taught surfaces. It echoes the latest Toyota Hybrid styling cues, with vertical fog lamps, larger lower opening and a streamlined upper grille.

“The crisp corners indicate aerodynamic efficiency, while the overall styling feel is efficient, yet dynamic,” Mr Beranger said.

“The lower grille texture is a random pattern, inspired by forms found in nature, moving away from traditional constructed patterns,” he said.

The “aero” theme continues along the side skirts, which flow into the rear diffuser, giving a sporty, yet lightweight and functional appearance. The rear spoiler enhances the visual appeal.

The headlights are symbolic of Toyota’s hybrid image with a blue hue. They fuse technical elements with natural forms. Some lenses have a waterfall impression, while others are functional, lightweight and technical in appearance. The rear LED lamps, also with a blue hue, provide an unmistakable hybrid look.

Toyota logos on the car are also highlighted by a translucent blue hue. The satin chrome front grille, mirrors and rear boot-lid garnish add to the clean, crisp image.

The wheels are a combination of shear, overlayed surfaces and graphics.

The body colour is unique – a satin white pearl with subtle blue highlights to provide a serene, calm feeling. The paint allows intricate detailing and features to show through.

The interior uses contrasting coloured trim. Highlights of metallic blue have been applied asymmetrically to the seats in a wave-like graphic reminiscent of the Hybrid Synergy Drive logo.

The seat embossing echoes the exterior grille mesh with a tree bark-like pattern. White stitching adds a subtle, yet premium touch. Satin chrome accents tie in with the exterior and add to the tranquil environment.

The Toyota Corolla is the best selling car of all time. It earned this honor by being economical and reliable. Both qualities are great for choosing a commuter car, but are rarely used to describe a performance vehicle.

Turns out Toyota does have a little bit of soul for its everyday car. Premiering at the Tokyo Auto Salon was the Super GT300’s, and this is not your grandmother’s car. It’s powered by a 3.5l V6 engine that delivers 300hp, and weights a light 1100 kg (2420 lbs). It will make its official launch in the 2009 Super GT racing series.

Toyota Motor Sales (TMS), U.S.A.,Inc. today announced that it will display the Toyota FT-EV concept on opening Media Day at the North American International Auto Show (NAIAS), confirming its plan to launch an urban commuter battery-electric vehicle (BEV) by 2012. This announcement, coupled with its compressed natural gas powered Camry Hybrid concept display at the 2008 Los Angeles Auto Show, signal Toyota’s intention to broaden the scope of its advanced alternative-fuel vehicle development.

“Now, more than ever, while we are so focused on the pressing issues of the moment, we cannot lose sight of our future,” said Irv Miller, TMS Group Vice President, Environmental and Public Affairs. “Nowhere is this more important than with our industry’s duty and commitment to provide true sustainable mobility with vehicles that significantly reduce fuel consumption, our carbon footprint and overall greenhouse gases.”

The FT-EV concept shares its platform with the revolutionary-new iQ urban commuter vehicle. Already a huge hit in Japan, the iQ is lightweight and seats four passengers in comfort and security, while delivering exceptional mileage, sporty performance, unique refinements and a fun, youthful image.

Toyota’s FT-EV concept imagines an urban dweller, driving up to 50 miles between home, work and other forms of public transportation, such as high-speed rail. Although, for now, the FT-EV remains a pure concept, it represents a natural pairing of product strategies.

“Last summer’s four-dollar-a-gallon gasoline was no anomaly. It was a brief glimpse of our future,” said Miller. “We must address the inevitability of peak oil by developing vehicles powered by alternatives to liquid-oil fuel, as well as new concepts, like the iQ, that are lighter in weight and smaller in size. This kind of vehicle, electrified or not, is where our industry must focus its creativity.”

Although BEVs and new smaller vehicles like the iQ will be a key component of Toyota’s sustainable mobility strategy, the conventional gas-electric hybrid, like the all new third-generation Prius, is considered Toyota’s long-term core powertrain technology.

Last year, Toyota announced that it planned to sell one million gas-electric hybrids per year sometime during the early 2010s. To accomplish this, Toyota will launch as many as 10 new hybrid models by the early 2010s, in various global markets. The new third-generation Toyota Prius and all new Lexus HS250h, both debuting in Detroit, are the first two examples of that effort.

Also, last year, Toyota announced that it would roll-out a large number of plug-in hybrid vehicles (PHVs) to global lease-fleet customers in 2010. That schedule has been moved up.

Beginning in late 2009, Toyota will start global delivery of 500 Prius PHVs powered by lithium-ion batteries. Of these initial vehicles, 150 will be placed with U.S. lease-fleet customers.

The first-generation lithium-ion batteries powering these PHVs will be built on an assembly line at Toyota’s PEVE (Panasonic EV Energy Company, LTD)
battery plant, a joint-venture production facility in which Toyota owns 60 percent equity. During its development, the new Prius was designed and engineered to package either the lithium-ion battery pack with plug-in capability, or the nickel-metal hydride battery for the conventional gas-electric system.

The 500 PHVs arriving globally in late 2009 will be used for market and engineering analysis. Lease–fleet customers will monitor the performance and durability of the first-generation lithium-ion battery, while offering real world feedback on how future customers might respond to the plug-in process.

“Future customers will have high expectations for these emerging technologies. This Prius PHV fleet program is a key first step in confirming how and when we might bring large numbers of plug-in hybrids to global markets,” said Miller.

“Our business is no longer about simply building and selling cars and trucks. It is about finding solutions to mobility challenges today and being prepared for more daunting challenges in our very near future.”

Toyota Motor Sales (TMS), U.S.A., Inc., today highlighted the versatility of its Hybrid Synergy Drive® system by showing a compressed natural gas (CNG) Camry Hybrid concept vehicle at the 2008 Los Angeles Auto Show.
“In the near future, growing demand for liquid petroleum simply and effectively will exceed supply,” said Chris Hostetter, group vice president, TMS Advanced Product Strategy. “Before that occurs, automakers must look to vehicles powered by alternative fuels. We believe CNG will be one of those alternatives.”
The current CNG benefits are amplified by rapidly changing market conditions and an increase in consumer environmental awareness. As a transport fuel, natural gas is a clean and safe gasoline alternative. It can potentially reduce U.S. dependency on foreign oil and reduce vehicle operating costs. Currently more than 99 percent of natural gas used in the U.S. comes from domestic & other North American sources. Proven worldwide natural gas reserves are estimated to last until 2100 and have the potential to last until 2200 through improved advanced production methods.

Natural gas also produces lower particulate emissions, nitrous oxide (NOx), carbon monoxide (CO), carbon dioxide (CO2) and non-methane organic gases (NMOG), and less CO2 per unit of energy when compared with gasoline. In addition, it has a higher flash point (ignition temperature) than gasoline, can run at a higher compression ratio and is quickly dispersed into the atmosphere, should a leak occur.

The CNG Camry Hybrid concept was designed by the TMS Advanced Product Strategy group and built by Metal Crafters of Fountain Valley, Calif. To convert the stock Camry Hybrid to a CNG vehicle, the gasoline fuel system was replaced with a CNG system including two CNG tanks installed in the spare tire well area.

The exterior of the vehicle also received some sporty ‘concept’ touches. A sleek custom front fascia and front bumper cover eliminate the grill opening, while a custom rear bumper covers the tail pipe and visible exhaust system. The vehicle is fitted with 19 x 7.5 alloy wheels and Bridgestone Potenza 225/35ZR19 run-flat tires to accommodate the lack of a spare tire. The overall ride height is lowered while new side body skirts and “Compressed Natural Gas Hybrid” graphics complete the unique look.

In 1999, Toyota marketed a CNG-powered four-cylinder Camry to fleet customers in California. Due to relatively low gasoline costs at that time, customers were not attracted to a vehicle that required special refueling techniques and a limited refueling infrastructure. The program was discontinued a year later. Today there are less than 1,000 CNG refueling stations nationwide, with less than half open to the public.

“Toyota believes CNG has huge potential, both in the U.S. and globally,” said Hostetter, “but CNG is just one of the many alternative fuels we’re exploring in our ongoing advanced technology research and development.”

Based on the all-new 2009 Toyota Yaris Five-Door Liftback, the Yaris Five-Door Tailback concept highlights functionality and youthful styling.

Functionality is emphasized through the automated rear suicide doors and rear split tailgate. The exterior features aggressively styled modifications including a custom wide body kit that enhances the front and rear fascia with a center exit exhaust, grille, and widened front and rear fender flares that incorporate new full length side rocker panels. The custom hood and newly designed rear spoiler add to the youthful styling of the Yaris 5 Door Tailgate concept. The Toyota Yaris 5 Door Tailback concept also features a compressed natural gas system (CNG). As an eco-friendly tuner, this bi-fuel concept offers the ability to switch from the vehicle’s combustion engine to its CNG system with the push of a button. The CNG tank and custom casing is housed in the rear of the vehicle and is unveiled as the rear tailgate is powered open.

The vehicle’s interior boosts an impressive Pioneer audio/visual system. While the lower monitor displays a variety of digital gauges, both monitors have the ability to display movies and videos which can be played through the integrated iPOD.

The trunk area houses a custom amplifier and subwoofer casing. Additionally, custom upholstery adorns the interior with gray suede and black leather front and rear seats with yellow stitching that adds to the youthful appeal of the concept. Gray suede is carried throughout the vehicle on the headliner, sun visors, and doors. The rear seats showcase 60:40 split functionality and reclines, slides and folds flat, a feature available on the Yaris 5-Door Liftback.

After creating a new definition in the small sport utility vehicle (SUV) segment, the RAV4 Performance Sport goes a step further by setting a new design standard. Making a bold and adventurous statement about the contrasts between rugged “Road Warrior” performance and opulent luxury, a Toyota Tundra CrewMax diesel dually project truck, which made its debut at the 2007 SEMA Show, is back again for SEMA 2008 in Toyota Vehicle Coral.
At its core, the Tundra light duty pickup’s stock engine was replaced with a medium duty diesel powerplant plucked from a 35,000-pound commercial truck. The 8.0-liter inline six-cylinder high-torque engine, made by Toyota affiliate Hino, is mated with an Eaton five-speed manual transmission and a Hino back end. Toyota Motorsports Technical Group heavily modified the Tundra to accommodate the beefed-up driveline.
A host of custom exterior treatments point to the off-the-charts muscle under the hood. Prominent examples include forged aluminum alloy 22.5-inch wheels custom made by Alcoa, a diamond plate-lined bed, a charcoal gray metallic flat paint finish and a fifth-wheel hitch rated at 24,000 pounds.

The muscular theme on the outside shifts dramatically to that of luxury on the inside with hand-sewn ginger leather seats, suede pillars and headliner and dual rear captain’s chairs with individual DVD entertainment systems.

The TRD Tundra Street Concept is based on the 2007 Toyota Tundra and incorporates a host of features specially developed for this model by TRD (Toyota Racing Development), providing significant styling and handling revisions and a more powerful, supercharged engine designed to peak the interest of any serious performance enthusiast.
The stock 5.7-liter DOHC VVTi V8 engine is equipped with TRD supercharger and intercooler package featuring an Eaton roots-type supercharger with an integrated air-to-liquid intercooler. Air flow is enhanced with a TRD cold air intake, matched with stainless dual rear exhaust.
The suspension has been revised for a lower ride height. A new TRD braking system has been added with larger calipers and 16-inch drilled rotors for enhanced stopping performance. A set of 285/45 tires ride on TRD 22×9 inch forged aluminum wheels.

Outside the TRD Tundra Street Concept sports a revised front grille and lower fascia with restyled rear valance and bumper. The tow hitch has been concealed and there’s a power tonneau cover with integrated spoiler. It’s topped off by a High Impact Red paint treatment. Inside, the seats are covered by custom fabric with leather center console and door trim.

The Yaris Club project pays tribute to Toyota’s racing heritage harkening back to the late ‘60s when Toyota challenged for the Group 7 category of Can-Am racing with the Toyota 7.
The Yaris Club is a stripped-down, no-nonsense car with no extras – only what is needed to perform. The roof has been removed and the windshield lowered. With the interior removed, a tonneau was fabricated, turning the Yaris into a single seater with a fairing that doubles as a driver headrest.
A supercharger, exhaust headers and a free-flowing exhaust were added for performance to back up the good looks. The suspension was lowered by two inches with front and rear coil-over shocks and larger brakes added. The Yaris Club was developed by Five Axis in Huntington Beach, Calif.

To illustrate the versatility of the new 2009 Toyota Venza a specially modified show vehicle by Five Axis will make its public debut at the 2008 Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) Show in Las Vegas from November 4-7.
The Five Axis Venza Active Sports Versatility (AS V) was created to illustrate the versatile applications of the new 2009 Toyota Venza with an emphasis on active sports. It is outfitted with several features offering unique solutions for the transport and storage of all types of winter sports equipment.
The rear of the vehicle houses a very unique utility system. Created by Magna Car Top Systems, an Integrated Cargo Carrier (ICC) stow away rack system provides numerous opportunities for transporting a variety of wet and dry goods such as skis and bicycles.

To complement the ICC system, Five Axis designed and created a multi-purpose rear cargo unit that allows for storage of various items. This hideaway design offers both privacy and protection from other heavier items that can be easily stored on top of the unit. The system also allows for isolated storage of messy items, offering further protection to the interior.

ASV exterior body enhancements include new front and rear bumpers and over-fenders for a more rugged appearance. Wider 20 x 10.5-inch wheels and larger diameter tires also complement the new look of the Venza AS V.

To best illustrate the active sports theme, an emphasis on winter sports was chosen. The Magna Car Top Systems’ ICC unit is fitted with a unique snowboard and ski carrier. At the SEMA Show the Venza ASV will be hitched to a trailer mounted with a snowmobile to display its towing capability.

Finally, a Five Axis custom-blended earth tone color palette of Lunar White and Bronze accents finish off the exterior for a fresh reference to some of latest trends in winter fashion.

The new 2009 Toyota Venza underwent a unique transformation by Street Image resulting in the creation of the SportLux Venza performance show car. The Venza SportLux will be displayed at the Toyota exhibit throughout the 2008 Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) Show in Las Vegas from November 4-7.

The conceptual vision of the Toyota SportLux Venza by the Street Image design team was centered on a vehicle which could be offered as a factory tuned model. Taking cues from European tuners, Street Image added an assortment of subtle, yet aggressive, body kit modifications including a six-piece lip kit enhancement, rear hatch spoiler, custom grille and integrated hood scoop.

Its performance driven stance reflects the Toyota SportLux Venza’s substantial boost in power output. Among its many performance modifications are several components from Toyota Racing Development (TRD) including a supercharger kit. The SportLux Venza’s power surge is complemented with a height adjustable coil over tuned suspension and rides on Chrome Cognac No 20 Wheels measuring 24-inches and Toyo Proxy 4 performance tires. The massive wheels are controlled by 15-inch front and 13.6-inch rear TRD Big Brakes with forged calipers.

Street Image added appropriate interior comfort and convenience modifications to the SportLux Venza including special Black & Burgundy leather seating. A state-of-the-art Eclipse entertainment system features a premium navigation system and includes front and rear video and high-powered audio. The overall effect gives passengers a refined sports car feel without sacrificing the utilitarian appeal of the Venza.

Exterior

The Truck is big in every way. The previous generation Tundra was a few inches smaller that Dodge, Ford or Chevy, but the 146 in. wheelbase of our latest generation Crewmax truck gives it the Tundra its first ever size advantage.

Toyota did a good job with the proportions on the Tundra. Because everything is big (doors, grille, lights, etc.), it does not show just how big of a truck this is in reality. Since ours is a 4×4, it’s tall too. The running boards are a necessary element to this truck (it’s a step up to the running boards and then a step up into the truck.)

Interior

The interior makes that truck feel bigger than the competition, when in fact it’s pretty much the same size. It sectioned into two areas: a small silver part for the essential driver controls, and a main black trimmed area. When its time to change the radio, the driver feels like he/she has to reach far away beyond the silver area and into the black section to operate the system.

The center console has more storage that it knows what to do with. There are pockets deep enough to hold files and wide enough to carry laptops. Toyota even offers removable trim patches if you want to eliminate the excess storage (a nice problem to have.)

Our option-filled SR5 was made for both work and play. All the controls are big and easy to grip even with gloves on—something that is necessary in a work truck. But features like the dual zone climate controls and touch screen DVD navigation system are definitely more about playtime.

Our Crewmax is the largest cab available, and it’s a noticeable difference. Gone are the days of a truck’s the back seat being an afterthought and was for kids only. The Tundra’s thirty-five inches of unobstructed rear leg room is better than many of the sedans we’ve had lately in our fleet.

Test Drive

One of the things we liked most about the truck was the 5.7-liter V8. It’s got dual overhear camshafts, four valves per cylinder, and variable valve timing (VVT-i). All of which is something that is usually found smaller cars to give them very good low-end performance. Because it’s put to use in the 381 hp V8, the result is a truck with a lot of power that’s always on tap – very vast, very cool.

But remember this is not a sports car. Its got a live rear axel, and when there’s nothing in the bed, there is virtually no weight over the rear wheels. So, the Tundra is great in a straight line, but it is not the machine to take barreling through corners because it will get away from you. Think of the Tundra like a first generation muscle car, except you couldn’t haul a ton of sod in a GTO.

But you didn’t buy the Tundra because you wanted a rally car; you bought it to be a truck. The payload of our Tundra is 1515 lbs and it can haul up to 7200 lbs. Without any load the braking feels heavy and capable. We didn’t load the bed or haul a trailer, but our driving impression was that it would have not problem carrying its maximum load.

Conclusion

We liked our Tundra. It was the most car-like truck we’ve driven recently. If we had only one vehicle, and our job required a truck, the Tundra would be a very persuasive argument. For a truck that came in under $40,000, we got the best of both worlds: big car engine and big truck capacity.

We’re going to miss the Tundra, maybe because we didn’t get to use it to its full capacity. We used it for hauling kids and friends, but next time we’re going to plan ahead. We’ll spend the week chopping down trees and buying big furniture, so we can fully enjoy the now full-sized Tundra.
