First of all the performance was improved by using modified cylinder heads, camshafts, strengthened valve springs, modified compressor ratios, a larger throttle valve and a completely modified exhaust. After a fine tuning of the engine’s controls a peak of 769 PS and a top torque of 910 Nm was printed out at the performance test station.

In a second step PS and Torque were stabilised by regrinding and finely adjusting the valve seats.

Even greater adjustments were made to the cooling system of Z06, that thanks to numerous special modifications now push up to four times as much cooling fluid through the engine of this super sportscar.

In addition the cooler was encapsulated and installed in combination with a new front skirt. It sounds simple, but because of the targeted air flow to the side a real venturi effect is created. A real advantage for the Corvette’s aerodynamics.

The new Chevrolet Malibu has a 4.5-inch (114 mm) shorter wheelbase and 62-inch (1,574 mm) front and rear tracks that are more than 2 inches (51 mm) wider than the model it replaces. Other exterior design cues include Chevrolet’s dual-port grille, projector HID headlamps, larger Chevrolet bow-tie badges front and rear, and new Camaro-inspired LED dual-element taillamps. The look is complemented by a range of large 17-, 18- and 19-inch wheels.

The new Malibu exterior is anticipated to be SAE-certified as one of the most aerodynamically efficient cars in the segment, with a coefficient of drag (Cd) rating near Chevrolet Volt’s Cd of .280. Because of Chevrolet Malibu’s new shape and design, engineers were able to remove 60 counts of wind drag compared to the model it replaces.

The new Malibu interior was designed to bring an element of sophistication to everyday driving, featuring an all-new dual cockpit design that creates an inviting, roomy and comfortable environment. The increased width of the new Chevrolet Malibu means a more spacious cabin. Compared to the previous model, it has nearly 4 cubic feet (113 L) of additional interior volume, along with more shoulder and hip room.

The 2013 Malibu features a global lineup of fuel-efficient and powerful four-cylinder engines that complements its European-inspired driving characteristics. An all-new Ecotec 2.5L dual overhead cam, four-cylinder engine with direct injection leads Chevrolet Malibu’s engine lineup in North America. It is expected to be one of the most efficient of its size in the market. New features include enhanced authority continuously variable valve timing, variable-displacement oil pump and electronic thermostat that save fuel, while delivering V-6-like performance. It is estimated the engine will be SAE-certified at more than 190 horsepower (141 kW) and 180 lb.-ft. of torque (245 Nm). The new engine has noise-reducing features such as a cast exhaust manifold, steel crank, low-noise timing chain and direct mount accessories that contribute to a quiet-cabin experience.

The 2.5L is mated to a Hydra-Matic 6T40 six-speed automatic with features designed to enhance powertrain efficiency. They include changes to clutch controls and hardware that improves shift response and time. These changes enabled engineers to specify higher gearing to improve cruising efficiency while maintaining acceleration performance and driveability.

The new Malibu will be sold in nearly 100 countries on six continents. It is available in LS, LT, ECO and LTZ models in North America. Malibu will be built in multiple locations around the globe, including the Fairfax, Kan., and Detroit-Hamtramck assembly plants in the United States. Pricing will be announced later this year.

The exterior signature of the Chevrolet Camaro 45th Anniversary Special Edition is its unique rally stripe, in red and silver, that contrasts the Carbon Flash Metallic paint. The package also includes: Unique 45th Anniversary hood and deck stripes; badges located beneath the front fender emblems, New-design 20-inch wheels in dark silver, Fog lamp and taillamp bezels finished in dark silver, RS-style taillamp lenses, Standard rear spoiler and HID headlamps, Body-color roof molding, Jet Black interior with leather-trimmed seats featuring the 45th Anniversary logo, White instrument panel and door trim inserts with the 45th Anniversary logo on the instrument panel, Red, white and blue stitching on the seats, steering wheel, shift knob/boot, door armrests and console lid and 45th Anniversary logo on the steering wheel and sill plates.

Camaro’s new 3.6L direct injection V-6 – the LFX engine – goes into production in the summer of 2011. It delivers an SAE-certified 323 horsepower (241 kW) at 6,800 rpm – an increase of 11 horsepower (8 kW) over the 2011 engine, with no compromise in fuel economy.

The LFX delivers the most standard power in the regular sports car segment. It is also 20.5 pounds (9.3 kg) lighter than its predecessor, which promotes a more balanced driving experience. EPA-estimated highway fuel economy for the ‘12 Camaro is 30 mpg (2LS model).

The 2011 Chevrolet Camaro Convertible is the 22nd Chevrolet chosen to pace “The Greatest Spectacle In Racing®” and the seventh Camaro. Adding to the rich heritage is the fact that 2011 will mark the 100th anniversary of the first Indianapolis 500, as well as the centennial year of Chevrolet.

The pace car, along with the matching festival cars, features a Summit White exterior accented with orange stripes and door graphics. The interior is trimmed in orange leather, including front seat headrests embossed with the Indy 500 logo, along with white door panels and instrument panel trim. The instrument panel trim features extensions of the orange exterior stripes. The color combination is similar to the design used on the 1969 Camaro Indy pace car – replicas of which have become among the most popular Camaros in the collector world.

Equipped with a 400-horsepower (298 kW) V-8 engine and six-speed automatic transmission, the actual pace car for the race requires no performance modifications to perform its duty in front of the racing field.

Redesigned for 2011, the 2011 Chevrolet Silverado HD heavy-duty lineup is broader than ever, with 10 2500HD models and eight single- and dual-rear-wheel 3500HD models – including a new 3500HD Crew Cab with a 6.5-foot cargo box. WT, LT and LTZ trim levels are offered, and popular features such as the EZ Lift tailgate and rearview camera system return. All models bring greater capability, improved ride and handling and a greater feeling of driver control.

Outside, the 2011 Silverado 2500HD and 3500HD models are distinguished by a power dome-style hood with a new, louvered design, as well as a new grille and full-width chrome steel front bumper. A new lineup of 17- (Dually), 18- and 20-inch wheel/tire combinations is featured, too (20-inch polished forged aluminum wheels are available on 2500HD).

Supporting the new 2011 Silverado HD trucks’ greater capabilities is a new version of the workhorse Duramax 6.6L diesel and Allison 1000 six-speed automatic transmission powertrain combination. The Duramax 6.6L is more powerful and durable and the Allison 1000 is stronger and helps enable new features, including the exhaust brake system.

The Chevrolet Sonic is offered in two body styles: a stylish four-door sedan and a sporty five-door. Each delivers class-leading rear-seat roominess and cargo space. The sedan and five-door models are distinctively different. The five-door carries a tight, two-box shape with aggressive, diving feature lines, while the sedan’s “notchback” profile has a more upscale and mature presence. At first glance, the five-door model looks like a three-door hatch because the rear door handles are discreetly located in the “C”-pillar area. The rear of the five-door continues with unconventional details, including exposed, motorcycle-inspired rear taillamps. Details that reinforce Chevrolet Sonic’s quality and attention to detail include chrome grille surrounds and matte black honeycomb grille inserts on all models, while a range of large wheel sizes, including 17-inch alloy wheels, reinforces its sporty demeanor.

Chevrolet Sonic models are powered by efficient, power-dense, small-displacement engines, including the Ecotec 1.4L turbo and the Ecotec 1.8L – the same engines used in the new Chevrolet Cruze. Three transmissions are available: a five-speed manual and six-speed automatic with the 1.8L and a six-speed manual with the 1.4L turbo. The Ecotec 1.4L turbo’s power ratings are estimated at 138 horsepower (103 kW) and 148 lb.-ft. of torque (200 Nm) between 1,850 rpm and 4,900 rpm.

The naturally aspirated Ecotec 1.8L engine has many of the same features of the Ecotec 1.4L turbo. It is a compact and durable four-cylinder engine designed for low maintenance, low emissions and fuel efficiency. Its two-stage variable intake manifold allows approximately 90 percent of peak torque to be available from 2,400 rpm to 6,500 rpm. It is estimated at 135 horsepower (101 kW), along with 123 lb.-ft. of torque (167 Nm) at 3,800 rpm.

Production of the Chevrolet Sonic begins later in 2011 at the General Motors Orion Assembly Center in Michigan, which received a $545-million investment in upgrades and retooling, and will help restore approximately 1,000 jobs in the metropolitan Detroit area.

Along with the groundbreaking electric drive system, Chevrolet has unveiled the all-new 2011 Volt Z-Spec Concept, a five-door, four-passenger electric vehicle with extended range designed to provide the benefits of an electric vehicle without limitations. Volt will be available in CA, TX, MI, NY, NJ, CT and Washington, DC at the end of 2010.

The 2011 Chevrolet Volt Z-Spec concept introduces unique features including unique lower rocker panels and lower front fascia, grille, taillamps, 19-inch wheels and exterior graphics. Although the Z-Spec parts are only concepts at the moment, they’re being considered for production.

The Volt Z-Spec is driven by the revolutionary Voltec propulsion system, which consists of a 16-kWh lithium-ion battery pack and electric drive unit that provide pure electric range between 25 and 50 miles in moderate conditions, depending on terrain, driving techniques, temperature and battery age.

Once the battery charge drops below a certain level, the Volt’s extended-range 1.4L engine kicks in to provide power to the Volt’s electric motors. With a top speed of 100 mph, the electric drive unit’s excellent low-speed torque of 273 lb.-ft. (368 Nm) takes it from 0 to 60 mph in less than 9.0 seconds and the quarter mile in less than 17.0 seconds.

With its attractive sweeping coupe roofline and short overhangs at both the front and rear, the new Cruze hatchback has the same dynamic ’stance’ as the sedan and will be instantly recognizable. It will benefit too from the same taut body ‘feel’ on the road, being built using the new body-frame integral system (BFI) which is complemented by the final tuning to chassis components. The BFI system results in high levels of stability and solidity.

Cargo capacity for the Cruze hatchback is close to 400 liters and will feature 60/40 split rear seating.

Chevrolet’s participation in the World Touring Car Championship with the Cruze is also currently paying great dividends. With four races left in the season, it currently leads both the drivers’ and team championships while also showcasing the dynamic qualities of the car to great effect.

The new Chevrolet Cruze 5-door hatchback will go on sale across Europe mid 2011 with prices announced nearer the launch date.

Every Vote Counts: Finalists in Chevrolet Volt Color Contest Compete to be First to Test-Drive a Volt

Nearly 13,000 consumers submitted entries Every state represented with at least one name entry Consumers vote Nov. 16 through Dec. 1 to decide the winner Winning name will be announced Dec. 1 in Los Angeles

DETROIT – “Chargetruse,” “Recharge Silver,” and “Voltaic Platinum” are among the nearly 13,000 entries consumers submitted in Chevrolet Volt’s paint color name contest. Chevrolet has named three finalists whom will compete for a chance to be the first consumer to test-drive a pre-production Chevrolet Volt electric vehicle.

Chevrolet selected “EV-ergreen” offered by Devin McQuarrie, 30, of San Jose, CA; “Viridian Joule” submitted by Dave Thomas, 40, of Sanford, FL; and “environMINT” entered by Matthew Valbuena, 30, of Rancho Santa Margarita, CA. Chevrolet chose the three finalists based equally on originality, creativity and the ability to capture the innovation and spirit of the Volt.

Consumers now determine the winner by voting for the favorite name of the three at “http://www.chevroletvoltage.com” through 8 a.m. ET on Dec. 1. The finalists and a guest each will travel to Los Angeles where the winner will be announced by Chevrolet on Dec. 1. Votes are limited to one per person, per internet protocol address during the voting period.

About 27,000 people – or half of all visitors to “http://www.chevroletvoltage.com” during the entry period Oct. 22 through Nov. 4 – submitted a color name.

The Chevrolet Volt is an electric vehicle with extended-range capability. It can drive up to 40 miles on electricity without using gasoline or producing tailpipe emissions. When the Volt’s lithium-ion battery runs low, an engine/generator seamlessly operates to extend the total driving range to more than 300 miles before refueling or stopping to recharge the battery.

Production for the Volt is expected to begin in late 2010. Pricing has not been announced.

You might have seen this sleek C6 based concept in the big screen blockbuster Transformers 2 and was previously known as the Corvette Centennial Concept, however now we can call the Stingray by its true name. Full of cues from a bygone era like the split rear window that dates back to the original 1963 Stingray Corvette. The concept made its debut earlier this year in Chicago, but it looked as good as ever sitting in South Beach. This concept came in a close second for concept vehicle of the show, but was only edged out slightly by its Cadillac cousin’s roof mounted solar panel. However the Stingray is absolutely stunning and the word is that the next generation Corvette will draw its inspiration from this concept.

Exterior impression:

The Equinox is an interesting vehicle because despite its large appearance, it has the footprint of a much smaller vehicle making it one of the easiest big cars to park on the market, and despite the crossover’s rather conservative appearance, the GM design team managed to sneak a few visually appealing touches into the mix. Starting up front, the 2010 Equinox wears the modern Chevrolet cross bar grill that was introduced back with the new Malibu. The front end is devoid of any protruding features, creating a much smoother surface to push through the air, however the chrome trim that surrounds the fog light housing goes a long way to improve the vehicle aesthetically, this theme carries over into the grill opening and window frames.

The other feature that we just couldn’t get enough of were the Equinox’s bulging fenders, not since the last time we watched a round of WRC competition has our editorial staff seen a set of bold blisters on a production car like these, which go a long way adding a muscular tone to the Equinox’s bubbly exterior and framed our car’s 18 inch machined aluminum rims perfectly. Out back the Equinox carries the chrome trend into the center of the tailgate, placing their 21st century emblem smack dab in the middle of a thick bar of the shiny stuff. Our V6 powered Equinox also came with a very simple and good looking dual exhaust with what looks like an imitation diffuser in between the tips, after all you can’t knock the design team for trying to add a little sporting style to the car.

Our only complaint with the Equinox is that on top of an attractive sheet metal structure, Chevrolet has added a few too many soft plastic moldings. Now these may be an affordable approach to adding some last minute lines to the vehicle, but the execution is quite poor. Take the black plastic where the rocker panels would traditionally go, not only do they easily come away from the door, but because they are hollow. After a few years of ownership, the amount of mud caked inside could be enough to make replacing them a good idea.

At first glance we were taken aback by the Equinox’s stylish interior, the first thing to catch our eyes were the 8 way power adjustable two tone leather seats that were accented with colored stitching. The red woven theme continues onto the door cards and the tilt telescope steering wheel just like the various tones and finishes found on the dash and trim. The biggest downfall of the Equinox’ interior is that just like on the outside, the design team chose to go with unattractive plastic in places where a little bit of a softer material would have gone a long way to improving the car’s feel.

For instance it was really nice to see that Chevrolet incorporated a back up camera into the navigation screen, and it was even better when we saw that the lines were moving with the steering wheel. Everything would have been perfect had it not been for the protruding piece of plastic that creates a visor for the LCD monitor. Not only was there plenty of play between the piece and the surrounding dash. Unlike a padded dash, when your fingers come into contact with the hard polymer’s sharp edges, there is just a sense of discomfort.

Aside from the materials selection, the rest of the Equinox’s interior was fantastic. The infotainment system consisted of a premium 8 speaker Pioneer AM/FM/XM radio assisted by an amplifier as well as an equalizer. There were also AUX and USB inputs for your own music storage device as well as voice guided turn by turn navigation, a 40 GB hard drive for storing tunes and a CD/DVD player that will feed images to some of the nicest factory flip up monitors integrated into the front seatbacks that we have seen on any new car. The units are barely noticeable when stowed away, and not obtrusive when opened up, manufacturers like Mercedes Benz and Porsche could learn a thing or two from the men who came up with that design.

Corvette Racing will open a new chapter with the competition debut of the next-generation Corvette C6.R at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course on August 6-8. In anticipation of a single GT class in 2010, Corvette Racing will test and develop the latest Corvette C6.R in the GT2 category in the final five rounds of the 2009 American Le Mans Series. With the upcoming move to a unified GT category, the twin Compuware Corvette C6.R race cars will compete against rivals representing Ferrari, Porsche, BMW, Aston Martin, Jaguar, Viper, Panoz, and Ford.

Based on the Corvette ZR1 supercar, the next-generation Corvette C6.R has even stronger links to the production version of America’s performance icon than its predecessors. The GT2 rules require the use of many production-based components, expanding the opportunities for the two-way transfer of technology between the race track and the showroom. The updated Corvette C6.R utilizes the ZR1’s body design, aerodynamic package, aluminum frame and chassis structure, steering system, windshield, and other components. The race team has prepared the cars for the rigors of endurance racing with safety and performance modifications as permitted by the GT2 rules.

“One of the many benefits of the Corvette Racing program has been the opportunity to demonstrate the technology transfer between the race car and the production car,” said Mark Kent, GM Racing manager. “The global movement toward a single GT class will allow us to compete head-to-head with more marketplace competitors while increasing both the production content of the Corvette C6.R race cars and the relevance of racing to our customers. This is a step that positions Corvette for the future of production-based sports car racing worldwide, and a move that is perfectly aligned with GM’s marketing and business objectives in racing.”

Previous versions of the Corvette C5-R and C6.R race cars have dominated the GTS and GT1 categories in the last decade, winning 77 races and eight consecutive ALMS championships. The GT1 Corvettes were retired following Corvette Racing’s sixth victory in the 24 Hours of Le Mans on June 14, 2009.

“In our decade in GT1, our primary focus has been on racing victories and the validation of the Corvette as a world-class sports car,” said Tadge Juechter, Corvette chief engineer. “As an authentic way to communicate to knowledgeable customers, nothing beats racing. As a cost-effective means to improve vehicle performance, nothing beats racing. These are the reasons racing is in Corvette’s DNA.

“Behind the scenes, the race team and the production car team have grown closer together, finding numerous ways to support each other and to make both cars better,” Juechter said. “Most automotive companies give lip service to claims like ‘racing improves the breed’ or ‘race on Sunday, sell on Monday’. For team Corvette, it is a daily reality. It is now impossible to imagine one team without the other.”

The upcoming GT regulations required a comprehensive redesign of the Corvette C6.R package. In place of the GT1 Corvette’s steel frame, the GT2 version utilizes the production ZR1’s hydroformed aluminum frame as the foundation for a fully integrated tubular steel safety cage. The GT1 version’s wide, louvered fenders are replaced by production-based ZR1 fenders with wheel flares. In accordance with the aerodynamic regulations, the rear wing is reduced 25 percent in width, the diffuser is a flat panel without fences or strakes, and the splitter extends only as far as its production ZR1 counterpart. Steel brake rotors have replaced the carbon discs used previously, and the wheels are aluminum instead of magnesium. The adjustable steering column and steering rack are sourced from the street Corvette.

“Integrating a steel safety cage that meets GM Racing’s stringent standards as well as the strength and durability targets required in racing is a challenge with an aluminum frame,” explained Corvette Racing engineering director Doug Louth. “Working in conjunction with the structure and chassis engineers in the Corvette production group, we designed, built and tested numerous examples before we finalized the configuration. We went through a similar process with the production Corvette group on the body design and aero components. It was truly a collaborative effort between the production engineers and the race team.”

In the remaining races in 2009, the Corvette race cars will be powered by 6.0-liter GM small-block V8s that are based on the 7.0-liter LS7.R that powered the GT1 version. This reduction in displacement was achieved by shortening the crankshaft stroke from 3.875-inch to 3.32-inch. The diameter of the series-mandated intake air restrictors was decreased from 30.6 mm to 28.6 mm, with a corresponding reduction in engine output from 590 to 470 horsepower. A 5.5-liter production-based GM small-block V8 is currently under development and will be introduced at the start of the 2010 season. The Corvette Racing team is continuing its commitment to green racing with the use of E85R ethanol racing fuel.

While much of the hardware has changed, Corvette Racing’s roster of championship-winning drivers remains the same. Johnny O’Connell and Jan Magnussen will share the No. 3 Compuware Corvette C6.R, and Oliver Gavin and Olivier Beretta will drive the No. 4 Compuware Corvette C6. R. They will be joined by Antonio Garcia and Marcel Fassler at Petit Le Mans.

Corvette Racing also has the continued support of its long-time sponsors and technical partners. Compuware is the team’s primary sponsor, with Mobil 1 supplying low-friction lubricants and Michelin providing its world-class racing tires. Corvette Racing’s sponsors also include XM Satellite Radio, UAW-GM, Genuine Corvette Accessories, Bose, Motorola, PRS Guitars, and BBS.

“Compuware leads the world in application performance solutions, and partnering with Corvette Racing gives us another high-tech, high-performance and high-impact platform for communicating to our customers and prospects,” said Compuware Chairman and CEO Peter Karmanos, Jr. “The launch of the Corvette C6.R in GT2 is a great extension to our relationship with General Motors, Chevy and Corvette. We look forward to even more victories in the months ahead.”

The GT2-spec Corvettes were designed, built and tested on a compressed schedule. The program was approved and announced in September 2008, and construction of the first chassis began in early December. The first track test was conducted at Road Atlanta on April 8-9, followed by single-car tests in Elkhart Lake, Wis., and Sebring, Fla.

“The Corvette Racing team had to take on several challenges simultaneously to execute this program,” said Doug Fehan, Corvette Racing program manager. “We were preparing for our regular race season with the GT1 cars while designing the GT2 version. The cars were being built and tested in the midst of our preparations for Le Mans. The team was multi-tasking to the extreme, operating on a leaner budget and a faster timeline. It was a monumental effort to have these cars ready for the Mid-Ohio race.”

Advanced technology tools enabled Corvette Racing to meet the challenge. “With the short development schedule, we relied on ‘virtual’ design and computer simulation more than ever before,” said team manager Gary Pratt. “We made design, engineering and manufacturing simultaneous processes as much as possible. For example, while the first chassis was being built, we continued to run computer simulations on suspension geometry and refined the aerodynamics using CFD (computational fluid dynamics) because these areas didn’t have to be finalized until later in the production timeline. We have developed the capabilities to do finite element analysis and composite fabrication in-house, which has accelerated our design and production cycle.

“We’re not running for a championship this year, so we’re looking at the upcoming races as preparation for 2010,” Pratt said. “Our only testing from this point on will be at the races, and we’ll be doing it in the public eye. Certainly we hope to achieve the same level of success that we did in GT1, but the caliber of the competition we will face in GT2 is very high. When we started in GT1 in 1999, it took a while to win; now we have 10 years of experience that should help us to become competitive in a new category. Everyone at Corvette Racing is looking forward to the challenge.”

Fehan is confident but cautious about Corvette Racing’s prospects in the GT2 category: “In the limited testing we’ve done so far, we’ve been very impressed with the car’s durability, reliability and performance,” he said. “We’ll continue to focus on those three factors in the upcoming races. We view the rest of this year as a development cycle, and we believe that our experience as a team in preparation, race strategy, and pit stop execution should allow us to be competitive even if there is a slight performance disparity.”

The GT2 version of the Corvette C6.R will make its debut in the Acura Sports Car Challenge at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course in Lexington, Ohio. The two-hour, 45-minute race is scheduled to start at 3 p.m. EDT on Saturday, August 8. ABC will televise the race tape-delayed at 2:30 p.m. EDT on Sunday, August 9.

Chevrolet is preparing to unveil a special edition Corvette in celebration of the Bowling Green, Kentucky based National Corvette Museum’s 15th Anniversary. This special edition National Corvette Museum Grand Sport Coupe is covered in Arctic White paint and features a unique blacked out section of the hood featuring a ghosted Jake, Corvette Racing’s mascot, in the center bulge surrounded by a red stripe. The National Corvette Museum logo is then incorporated into the B-pillar and adds the finishing touches to this special edition C6.

The car comes standard with a 6 speed manual transmission, a set of retro chrome wheels, with a set of unique vents in the fenders, a dual mode exhaust, blacked out headlight housings and a ZR1 rear spoiler. The interior is upgraded with a pair of red two-tone leather seats and an audio/video system with touch-screen navigation. Not to shabby for a fifteenth birthday present.

Created in collaboration with the tuner Irmscher, the special edition Chevrolet Cruze Bumblebee pays tribute to the Bumblebee Camaro, the automotive icon that played a staring role as an Autobot in the two Transformers movies with its rally stripes and flashy running gear and will make its world debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September.

No matter what angle you look at the Cruze Bumblebee from, the car’s design is stunning. The new orange on black compact Chevrolet benefits from being lowered by 30 mm increasing handling performance and simply aesthetically pleasing. The mirror covers, fog light housings and rear diffuser have also been finished in the same bright shade of orange as the silver lined racing stripes. Out back the exhaust is finished off with a pair of unique stainless steel tips. Continueing the orange theme are a set of 18 inch Irmscher designed Turbo Star wheels wearing a set of sticky 225 mm wide tires, specially prepared for this unique Cruze. The Cruze Bumblebee is based on the automatic 1.8 LT version of the new Chevy and will be built upon request.

The MOONLANDER has been given some 21st century rolling stock with a set of white multi-spoke 20 inch rims and a set of lowering springs. Whereas the original lunar rover rode on piano wire, fahrmitgas.de selected a set of high performance rubber sized 245/40 to wrap their light weight 20 inch alloys.

The interior of the limited edition MOONLANDER comes complete with a white placard verifying the vehicle’s serial number as well as an iPod to match as well as a replica space suit complete with helmet. Celebrating the 40th anniversary of the first moon landing, fahrmitgas.de is producing only 40 MOONLANDER vehicles, and they start at 21,500 Euros.

Press release

“Drive me to the Moon…” That’s the motto under which fahrmitgas.de presents the special model MOONLANDER based on the Chevrolet Captiva on occasion of the 40th anniversary of the first moon landing on July 20, 1969.

The SUV is equipped with a dual-mode engine that runs on gasoline or autogas regardless of equipment line. The front-wheel-drive entry model of the fahrmitgas.de MOONLANDER is powered by a 2.4-liter engine with 136 hp / 100 kW. The MOONLANDER 3.2 model boasts a V6 engine with 230 hp / 169 kW and four-wheel drive.

The universe-white/orbiter-black color scheme of the ’Lunar Rover’ is reminiscent of the Apollo 11 rocket as are the “MANNED MISSION LUNAR VEHICLE” decals and the names of the Apollo 11 crew members on the silver-mirrored rear side windows. White 20-inch light-alloy wheels and a ride-height lowering round out the eye-catching looks.

The interior of all 40 vehicles in this limited-edition series features a white fahrmitgas.de MOONLANDER placard with the vehicle’s serial number and an iPod. Prices start at 21,500 Euros and include a replica of a space suit.

fahrmitgas.de has been the official supplier of Chevrolet for LPG autogas systems since 2004. But the company from Rödermark in Germany also develops individual concepts for special models. On occasion of the 40th anniversary of the first moon landing the fahrmitgas.de engineers and designers have developed the MOONLANDER based on the Chevrolet Captiva.

The dual-mode engine allows operation of the five-door vehicle with either gasoline or autogas. In autogas mode the MOONLANDER delivers fuel-cost savings of more than 50 percent, depending on national fuel prices. The clean-burning autogas also reduces CO2 emissions by some 12 percent and thus lowers emission-based vehicle taxes.

Customers can choose from two engines for the fahrmitgas.de MOONLANDER. The entry-level model is powered by a 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine with 136 hp / 100 kW. Power is transferred to the front wheels via a five-speed automatic gearbox. The exclusive SUV is also available with a 3.2-liter V6 engine with 230 hp / 169 kW and a peak torque of 297 Nm at 3,200 rpm. This top-of-the-line model features a five-speed automatic gearbox and permanent four-wheel drive. The MOONLANDER 3.2 sprints from rest to 100 km/h in 8.8 seconds and reaches a top speed of 204 km/h.

The appearance of the special model is based on the color scheme of the Apollo 11 rocket: The exterior sets itself apart from the rest with a two-tone color scheme painted universe white/orbiter black. MOONLANDER logos characterize the appearance as do the “MANNED MISSION LUNAR VEHICLE” decals with starting number 11. The silver-mirrored rear side windows carry the names of the astronauts of the first moon landing.

White-painted 8Jx20 ten-spoke wheels with black MOONLANDER emblem are also part of the standard equipment of the limited-edition MOONLANDER. The production run will end after just 40 vehicles, one for each year since the first time man landed on the moon. fahrmitgas.de selected tires in size 245/40 R 20 as the optimal solution. fahrmitgas.de sport springs that match these high-performance tires lower the ride height of the Captiva by some 35 millimeters. The lowered center of gravity further optimizes handling.

The fahrmitgas.de MOONLANDER starts at 21,500 Euros. The standard equipment includes automatic climate control, a stereo system, an iPod and a replica of a space suit complete with helmet.

The Chevrolet Cobalt XFE is what you get when you ask the salesman for a base Cobalt. Despite the low price, the XFE is still the same good looking compact from Chevrolet. The steel wheels are a dead giveaway to the budget minded nature of the XFE, wrapped in low rolling resistance rubber means that although they are unattractive, the rolling adds to the vehicle’s efficiency. Chevrolet’s cost cutting department didn’t take everything away; the XFE has a sporty rear wing that would look good with a set of aftermarket rims. The only other feature that could distinguish this plain Jane Cobalt apart from the rest of the crowd are the XFE specific badges.

Interior Impression:

The interior of the Chevrolet Cobalt XFE can be described by a few different adjectives; some would call it clean, others would call it bare. The door panels feature window cranks as opposed to switches and locking each individual lock on the four-door could be a pain, but on the coupe it wasn’t such a big deal. The seats are only offered in cloth, but they are covered with an eye pleasing two-tone color scheme. The speedometer and tachometer are easy to read, but the gauges are another area where you can see the cost cutting nature of the XFE, you won’t find a coolant temperature gauge or fancy things like a tire pressure monitoring system; the only extra is the gas gauge. Whereas the majority of the interior is what you can call stripped, the Chevrolet design team didn’t skimp on the radio. The unit receives AM/FM/XM signals and even has MP3 capabilities. Who needs a CD player when you have an iPod?

Why to buy?

The Chevrolet Cobalt XFE would make a great first car, a vehicle that any parent should feel comfortable giving their road going teen. The low price and efficient nature of the XFE makes it an economical solution to personal transportation. If you are shopping Corolla, Civic or Focus you might like to know that the XFE gets better gas mileage than all them. According to Chevrolet’s General Manager Ed Pepper, the “Cobalt has always been an efficient performer, but the changes with the new XFE elevate it to a leadership position that will appeal to customers who put fuel economy at the top of their new-car priority list, … better still, the efficiency enhancements don’t come at the price of the safety and convenience features that serve as the foundation of Cobalt’s value story.”

As I watched the field of the Koni Challenge racing series lap Laguna Seca, I saw something that changed my mind about this low budget Cobalt. With a little over an hour and a half left in the race, the number 138 Chevrolet Cobalt overshot The Corkscrew and plummeted into the gravel covered hillside ripping off the front splitter, and giving the driver an apparent jolt. As the black Cobalt drove into the pits seemingly unscathed, I thought to myself, that’s a pretty strong racecar. So for tuners and racecar builders, the already stripped XFE would be a better starting point for their high performance application, the low purchase price also leaves more money for the final product.

The Cobalt XFE is anything but a luxury ride. The car’s compact economical nature doesn’t lend itself to being an automobile filled with creature comforts, instead it is a purpose built low budget gas sipper. If you are looking for a vehicle filled with factory options keep shopping, maybe you should check out an Escalade instead.

Artisan Performance and Turbochargers.com are joining forces to create a 600 HP Camaro SS. The setup uses a pair of rear mounted turbos a new cat-back exhaust, menacing intercooler and a retuned ECU to boost the output of the 6.2 Liter V8. The body is widened by 1.5 inches up front and 3 inches in the rear to accommodate the 21 and 22 inch staggered iForged wheel setup. Stopping power will be handled by a 14 inch SSBC Big Brake kit. The body receives a new lip spoiler, a rear diffuser, new gauges and a special numbered plaque to show off to your friends. This much Camaro will set you back $69,000 when the SA-600 goes on sale this summer.

Chevrolet will produce 2000 Corvette ZR-1s a year, meaning that thousands of people will be fortunate enough to own the fastest factory Corvette ever made. But if standing out from the crowd is what you are after, this is your chance. Just like Highlander, there can be only one. The Chevrolet Corvette ZR-1 Hero Edition is a special edition, 1 of 1, featuring a pair of red stripes running the length of the vehicle, but my favorite feature is the Hero Edition badge. So how much of a premium will this one of a kind supercar go for? Actually this Hero ZR-1 can be yours for only $3. The car is part of the Corvette Dream Giveaway put on by the Kids Wish Network. If you win, not only will you be able to drive home this modern Chevy supercar, but also a matching 1967 427 big block version as well. Check out the link to find out more.

Grand Sport. It’s one of the most storied monikers in Corvette’s illustrious racing heritage and it is returning the lineup. Chevrolet announced the new, 2010 Corvette Grand Sport at the 12th annunal C5/C6 Corvette Birthday Bash, held at the National Corvette Museum, in Bowling Green, Ky.

The new Grand Sport model combines the Corvette’s LS3-based powertrain with unique, wide-body styling and a racetrack-bred suspension for a distinctive, starting grid-ready performer. It is offered in both coupe and convertible body styles, with either a six-speed manual or six-speed automatic transmission. The LS3 6.2L engine is rated at 430 horsepower (321 kW)* and 424 lb.-ft. of torque (575 Nm)* with the standard exhaust system. An optional two-mode exhaust system elevates the power ratings to 436 horses (325 kW) and 428 lb.-ft. (580 Nm).

The Grand Sport replaces the Corvette’s previous Z51 package and brings a greater degree of handling performance, with wider wheels and tires; revised shock, stabilizer bar and spring specifications and specific gearing. The equipment enables cornering capability of 1.0 g, as well as a 0.2-second improvement in 0-60 acceleration vs. standard LS3-powered models.

Grand Sport coupe models equipped with the manual transmission are uniquely outfitted for racetrack competition, too, with a dry-sump oiling system, differential cooler and a rear-mounted battery.

The complete list of content and special features for the Grand Sport includes

Wider front and rear fenders – including specific front fenders with integrated Grand Sport badges

Z06-style front splitter and tall rear spoiler

Functional brake ducts and extra cooling

Unique 18-inch front and 19-inch wheels; painted finish standard and chrome finish optional

Large 275/35ZR18 tires in front and 325/30ZR19 tires in the rear

Z06-size brakes, including 14-inch (355 mm) front rotors with six-piston calipers and 13.4-inch (340 mm) rear rotors with four-piston calipers

Specific manual transmission gear ratios

Specific rear axle ratio on automatic-equipped modles

With its special equipment, the Grand Sport offers a unique blend of performance and amenities. Its suspension package approaches that of the Z06, but includes a removable roof on coupes (Z06 has a fixed roof) and, of course, the availability of a convertible body style. Also, the paddle-shift six-speed automatic transmission is offered, while a manual transmission is the only choice with the Z06.

All of Corvette’s exterior colors are offered on the Grand Sport and an available Heritage package adds iconic front fender hash marks offered in four colors, as well as two-tone seats with Grand Sport embroidery. The Grand Sport can be ordered with 1LT, 2LT, 3LT and 4LT trim packages, too.

Grand Sport history

Envisioned by legendary Corvette engineer Zora Arkus-Duntov as a factory-built, lightweight and race-ready production model that would trump domestic and foreign road-racing competitors, the original Corvette Grand Sport was a promising idea stymied by GM’s agreement to stay out of manufacturer-backed motorsports.

The planned 125 production models required for racing-class homologation were never built, but five prototypes based on the styling of the 1963 Corvette were hand-assembled under Duntov’s watchful eye. And while they looked like production models, the prototypes were purpose-built racecars that shared little with their assembly-line cousins. Duntov also oversaw the Grand Sport engine program that featured a special, 377-cubic-inch small-block V-8 and used side-draft carburetors.

Although never officially sanctioned by General Motors, the five Grand Sport prototypes saw extensive racing experience throughout the 1960s in the hands of “private” racers who had strong contacts within Duntov’s engineering circle. All five original cars are accounted for today and are among the most valuable in the collector market.

Chevrolet offered a limited-edition Grand Sport production model in 1996, commemorating the original racing cars and marking the end of the C4 era in Corvette production. All of the 1,000 examples were painted Admiral Blue and featured a white center stripe and red “hash mark” graphics on the left front fender, a graphic scheme that mimicked the look of some of the original racecars.

The all-new Chevrolet Cruze sedan raises the bar for design appeal, build quality and running refinement in Europe’s compact value segment.

Backed by an anticipated high level EuroNCAP crash safety rating and an all-new powertrain line-up, Cruze also heralds the introduction of a new global design language for the Chevrolet brand.

“Chevrolet has always stood for value and Cruze delivers on that promise like never before,” says Wayne Brannon, GM Europe Vice President, Chevrolet. “It redefines value with its design, quality, materials and great style inside and out.”

Developed to satisfy European tastes in design and chassis performance, Cruze goes on sale in March and will spearhead the launch of a series of new products that share its design and quality standards. Quite simply, Chevrolet believes the introduction of Cruze has ’moved the goalposts’ for products seeking to compete successfully in its segment.

Exterior Design

The multi-national design team, based in Korea with input from colleagues in Germany, the United States and Australia, were tasked with delivering an all-new compact, notchback sedan that will re-energize the Chevrolet brand.

“Our goal was to be revolutionary, not evolutionary,” says Taewan Kim, Vice President of the GM DAT Design Center in Korea. Inside and out, the team has developed a new global design language for the Chevrolet brand, introducing fresh visual elements while leveraging the potential to express traditional, Chevy signature design cues in new ways.

An arching roofline, extending from the steeply raked windshield into the slim
rear pillars, is the defining exterior feature of Cruze. Combined with a relatively short rear deck, it brings four-door coupé-like looks to this market segment for the first time.

Wider and longer than its predecessor, Cruze has a well-planted, close-to-the-ground stance with its wheels located at the outer edges of the tautly drawn bodywork. A distinctive concave shoulder line flows along the sides of the car into the rear deck lid and is set to become a new signature Chevy design feature. The upscale visual appearance is also reinforced by clean, uncluttered bodywork free from moldings or trim.

The signature dual-port grille carries Chevy’s gold bowtie with a new air of self-confidence. It is flanked by distinctive headlamp housings, with ’jewel-effect’ detailing, that sweep up, arrow-like, to a point in the front fenders. Neat rear styling includes flush-mounted tail light clusters, each molded with two circular shapes, echoing a traditional Chevy twin light styling motif.

The svelte looks are backed by a competitive 0.31 co-efficient of drag and a build quality with attention to detail typical of products costing far more. A best-in-class fit and finish for panel gaps and shut-lines contribute to the quality, ’hewn from solid’ appearance.

“This is a car with a strong, upscale character and a great stance,” adds Taewan Kim. “We think it will stand out among its competitors.”

Interior Design and Features

Conveying a sporty yet warm ambience, the five-seater cabin is typified by harmonious, flowing lines and the application of grained, soft-touch materials. It is a high quality execution that transcends the compact value segment.

Class-leading features include the flush fit of panels, with exceptionally tight gap tolerances, and generous rear passenger leg, head and shoulder room, despite Cruze’s signature sloping roofline.

The core interior design theme is a modern expression of a traditional Chevy styling cue – the signature ’twin cockpit’ layout of the Corvette, a motif designed to bringing driver and passenger closer to a ’shared’ experience. On each side of the main fascia, there is a choice of colored fabric or grained vinyl panels, which are complemented by matching inserts in the seats and door trims.

The center point for the ’dual cockpit’ symmetry is a neatly integrated center stack, housing the infotainment and air conditioning displays and controls. It is mounted at a shallow angle and has a flowing, free form which eliminates straight lines and the traditional ’picture framing’ of panels.

Three-dimensional math modeling was used in the design of the main instrument cluster. The analogue dials are backlit by LED for clear, crisp illumination in white and ice blue.

Compared to the seats of its predecessor, the main improvements for Cruze are the use of a wire mesh construction to distribute weight more evenly, a firmer foam filling and deeper bolstering for the cushions and seat-backs, front and rear.

The fabric upholstery includes high quality French seam stitching that provides excellent durability and eliminates the possibility of a ’stretched-seam’ appearance over time. Leather upholstery, with heated front seats, is an option for the top LT specification.

The range of fore/aft adjustment for the front seats has been extended by approximately 50 mm, giving the longest travel in the value compact segment.

Manually-controlled air conditioning is an option for base and standard with LS variants, while dual-zone automatic climate control is standard with LT specification. A particulate and odor filtration system that cleans the air entering the cabin is standard throughout the range, as is a heated rear screen.

An AM/FM/CD audio system, with RDS digital signaling, an MP3 playback facility and two-color graphic display, is standard for base and LS variants. The LT system adds an in-dash, six-CD auto-changer and a USB socket for an iPod in the center console. A DVD-based Navigation system is offered in all specifications and includes a 7-inch color map display, a segment ’first’ for Chevrolet.

Structure and Safety Systems

Cruze’s body structure is among the stiffest in its class, with a torsional rigidity 140% greater than that of its predecessor. This tight, strong structure is key to suppressing noise, vibration and harshness (NVH), as well as securing a good crash safety performance and optimal ride and handling properties.

The car has been co-operatively engineered at GM facilities in Germany, the United States, Australia and Korea. “In key areas, such the body structure, suspension, safety and electrical systems, we have drawn on GM ’best practices’ around the world,” says Peter Mertens, GM Global Vehicle Line Executive for compact cars.

The core structure is a unitary construction fabricated from steel beams, pressings and box sections, with an overall torsional rigidity of 17.66 KNm/degree of deflection. About 65% of the structure is composed of high-strength steels (HSS), approximately 50% more than in its predecessor. About 30% more spot welds are also used throughout the structure.

Efficient load paths provide maximum occupant protection in the event of an impact from virtually any direction. Full-length beams and enhancements to the sills, B-pillars and A-pillars, through the use of high-strength steels and tailored blank processing, all contribute to the vehicle’s excellent crashworthiness.

The energy absorbing front and rear crumple zones are designed to deform as efficiently as possible in order to maintain the integrity of the passenger compartment, which is protected by a safety cage reinforced with tubular-section members that frame the door openings and support the roof. The combination of a single-piece side structure and ultra-high strength steel door beams also provides effective side impact protection.

At low speeds up to 4 km/h, the front and rear bumper skins are designed to absorb light impact energy, helping to minimize bodywork damage.

Apart from minimizing noise and vibration, a stiff structure also makes it easier to isolate residual powertrain, road and wind noise for even quieter cabin comfort. Cruze has achieved interior acoustic and wind noise ratings that are both among best-in-class for compact sedans in the value segment.

Three-point seatbelts are fitted for all five seating positions. Driver and passenger front airbags, side curtain roof rail airbags, front seat-mounted side airbags, and a collapsible pedal assembly are all fitted as standard. Active safety measures include the anti-lock braking (ABS), traction control (TCS) and optional Electronic Stability Control (ESC).

Powertrain

The all-new gasoline and diesel line-up comprises 1.6 and 1.8-liter, all-aluminum, gasoline engines, and a 2.0-liter turbo diesel unit with 16 valves.

Both gasoline engines feature variable valve timing on both the inlet and exhaust sides. The 1.6-liter engine develops 113 hp/83 kW maximum power at 6,400 rpm and peak torque of 153 Nm at 4,200 rpm.

The 1.8-liter version offers even more responsive performance, with 141 hp/104 kW at 6,200 rpm and peak torque of 176 Nm at 3,800 rpm, including 85% from just 2,000 rpm right up to 6,300 rpm. In terms of power output-per-liter, this engine is among the most efficient on the market.

With manual transmissions, these engines deliver zero to 100 km/h acceleration in 12.5 and 10.0 seconds, respectively, and fuel consumption over the combined cycle of 6.7 and 6.8 L/100 km.

The new, 16-valve, 2.0-liter turbo diesel, developing 150 hp/110 kW, adds power with even greater frugality. Impressive fuel economy – 5.6 L/100 km over the combined cycle – offers a potential driving range of over 1,000 km. It is fitted as standard with a maintenance-free exhaust particulate filter.

The common rail, multiple injection design includes variable geometry turbocharging (VGT). With strong torque of 320 Nm from just 2,000 rpm, this engine enables zero to 100 km/h acceleration in 10.0 seconds, and even more impressive in-gear performance, with 80-120 km/h in fifth gear in 12.5 seconds. It will be joined later in the year by a 125 hp/92 kW version.

The 1.6-liter engine is fitted as standard for base and LS variants, while the 1.8-liter is standard for LT and optional for LS. Both are available with a five-speed manual gearbox or a new six-speed automatic transmission, a segment ’first’ for Chevrolet.

The 2.0-liter turbo diesel is fitted to LT variants only and the 125 hp/92 kW version will be offered for base and LS. Both these engines are available only with manual transmission.

For all engine applications, a universal front sub-frame, carrying the engine and transmission, is bolted in position via four rubber bushings. This ’isolated’ mounting helps reduce the transmission of engine vibration and road noise into the cabin.

Suspension, Brakes, Steering

Cruze’s suspension, braking and steering systems have been developed on European roads to meet European driving tastes. Striking a balance between agility and ride comfort, Cruze offers the driver a high degree of ’connectedness’ while also delivering a relaxed and refined ride character.

Compared to its predecessor, Cruze benefits from a wider ’footprint’ that contributes to more stable handling. The front track is increased to 1,544 mm (up by 64 mm) and the rear track to 1,558 mm (up 78 mm), while the 2,685 mm wheelbase is 85 mm longer. The proportionately greater increases in track enable an inherently better road-holding capability.

Front suspension is by McPherson strut, with side-load compensation to reduce sliding friction. The front sub-frame provides a firm location for the inboard mounting of the lower A-arms. Hydraulic bushings – a feature commonly found on more expensive vehicles – are used to give a higher degree of ride isolation and a more controlled absorption of road input loads.

At the rear, an advanced, compound crank (torsion beam) layout is used. Apart from enabling consistent wheel camber control, this suspension system offers savings in space and weight that are valuable for a compact segment vehicle.

The beam, double-walled and U-shaped in profile, is attached to trailing links through a patented, ’magnetic-arc’ welding process. This production technology allows the beam’s thickness and attachment angles to be varied according to different engine and vehicle weights, facilitating the fine tuning of roll-rate and roll-steer characteristics.

Disc brakes, ventilated at the front and solid at the rear, are fitted all round.

An all-wheel, anti-lock braking system (ABS), traction control (TCS) and Electronic Brake force Distribution (EBD), which controls front-to-rear braking effort, are fitted as standard (EU + 2 countries).

Electronic Stability Control (ESC), also standard (EU + 2 countries), uses both the ABS and TCS functions to gently counteract over-exuberance or misjudgments by the driver. It is also useful in helping the driver keep control during an emergency avoidance maneuver.

The rack-and-pinion steering is hydraulically power-assisted and fast-acting, with less than three turns of the wheel required lock-to-lock.

Additionally, details such as frameless door windows with automatic indexing glass contribute to the overall feeling of quality, substance and technical prowess.

Design details

With a design that is very faithful to the original concept, the 2010 Camaro is a 21 st century sports car that acknowledges its heritage. A long front dash-to-axle and short rear deck give the Camaro classic proportions, while a sleek windshield profile, wheels pushed to the corners and muscular fender forms are modern elements that reinforce its advanced engineering – and give the car a decidedly aggressive stance.

Elements such as a forward-V shape at the front of the car and “gills” in the rear quarter panels are distinctly Camaro cues, as are the broad rear fender “shoulders.” Those elements make the new Camaro instantly recognizable, but their execution is smoothly integrated into the contemporary exterior form. A family of large, 18-, 19- and 20-inch wheels also contributes to the Camaro’s modern appearance.

“The new Camaro is just that – new,” said Ed Welburn, vice president of GM Global Design. “We acknowledge the nameplate’s strong heritage in the design, but recognize that keeping this modern sports car relevant meant more than simply honoring a classic car. The line forms, stance and overall execution are consistent with other new Chevrolets.”

A well-executed balance of heritage, modern design and attention to detail also characterizes the Camaro’s interior. A pair of deeply recessed instrument binnacles that feature round gauges in square housings is a nod to classic Camaros, while an available ambient light package offers advanced LED light pipe technology to give the cabin a distinctive and inviting glow. Cloth upholstery is standard; heated leather-appointed seats are available.

Details such as large, chrome-trimmed controls, low-gloss surfaces and premium fabric or acrylic appliqués convey a richness that is unprecedented in previous Camaro models – and challenge its contemporary competitors. More great detail is evidenced in the available center-console gauge cluster, which takes its cue from a similar option on 1969 Camaros. It displays oil temperature, oil pressure, state-of-battery and transmission fluid temperature, all highlighted with modern LED backlighting.

Powertrains

An advanced, efficient 3.6L direct-injected V-6 with variable valve timing is standard on LS and LT models. Direct injection technology helps the engine deliver more power through increased efficiency, while maintaining fuel economy and lowering emissions. That means less fuel is consumed and lower emissions generated – including a 25-percent drop in cold-start hydrocarbon emissions.

The Camaro’s 3.6L engine also employs variable valve timing to optimize performance and fuel economy across the rpm range. It is rated at an estimated 300 horsepower (224 kW) and 273 lb.-ft. of torque (370 Nm). A six-speed manual transmission is standard with the 3.6L engine; a Hydra-Matic 6L50 electronically controlled six-speed automatic, with TAPshift control, is available.

The high-performance Camaro SS is equipped with a powerful 6.2L V-8, with a choice of a six-speed manual or six-speed automatic transmission. Standard, manual transmission-equipped models receive the LS3 engine, estimated at 422 horsepower (315 kW) and 408 lb.-ft. of torque (553 Nm). The LS3 debuted on the 2008 Corvette and uses high-flow cylinder heads based on the Corvette Z06’s LS7 engine to enable great low-end torque and high-rpm power. It is paired with a TR6060 six-speed transmission.

A new, L99 V-8 engine is used on automatic transmission-equipped SS models. It is based on the LS3 and carries all of its high-performance design features, but also includes GM’s fuel-saving Active Fuel Management feature. It enables the engine to run on only four cylinders during light-load driving conditions, such as highway cruising, to improve fuel economy. The V-8 is estimated at 400 horsepower (299 kW) and 395 lb.-ft. of torque (535 Nm); and it is matched with a Hydra-Matic 6L80 six-speed transmission. This combination delivers an estimated 23 mpg on the highway.

Body structure and chassis

The 2010 Camaro is built on GM’s global rear-wheel-drive architecture, with a strong body structure that enhances safety, quietness and handling. World-class build quality and attention to detail are enabled by features including one-piece body side stampings and very precise tolerances between body panels.

Front and rear independent suspensions are mounted to the rigid chassis, including a multi-link strut arrangement in the front with a direct-acting stabilizer bar and a double ball-joint configuration; and a unique, 4.5-link rear suspension that is double-isolated from the chassis for smoother, quieter driving experience.

Camaro offers two suspensions. LS and LT models receive an FE2 (sport) suspension, while the SS receives the FE3 (performance) suspension, including a lower ride height. Each is tuned to match the performance capabilities of their respective powertrains, as are their wheel-and-tire combinations.

A variable-rate rack-and-pinion power steering system mounts the rack forward of the front axle, for more direct action, an enhanced feeling of driver feedback and better weight balance.

Brakes and chassis control

Four-wheel disc brakes with ABS are standard on all models. LS and LT models receive single-piston calipers all around, with mass-reducing aluminum rear calipers. SS models have larger rotors that are acted upon by four-piston, aluminum Brembo calipers at all four corners. They are designed to stand up to the severe use encountered on road-race tracks, delivering excellent feedback and pedal feel, as well as fade-resistant performance during racing.

GM’s StabilTrak electronic stability control system is standard and incorporates traction control. The system on SS models includes Competitive/Sport mode that is adjustable for performance driving, such as on a racetrack; it also includes a Launch Control feature on SS models with the manual transmission. It enables quicker, more consistent takeoffs during performance driving.

Safety

Designed to protect occupants before, during and after a crash, the Camaro offers a comprehensive system of safety features – starting with a robust body structure and integral safety cage around the passenger compartment. High-strength steel and ultra high-strength steel are used in key areas throughout the structure.

Safety technologies integrated in the Camaro include:

Driver and front-passenger dual-stage air bags

Dual-stage Air Bags — Dual-stage air bags are designed to inflate at high speed in serious crashes, but deploy with less force in minor-to-moderate crashes. The air bag system’s sensors determined the severity of the crash, signaling the appropriate deployment speed.

Driver and front-passenger seat-mounted thorax side-impact air bags

Head curtain side-impact air bags for front and rear seat occupants

Front seat safety belt load limiters and pre-tensioners

The front passenger protection system
Front Passenger Detection System — To avert potential injury risk from high-pressure airbag inflation, the front passenger detection system will suppress air bag deployment if a child or person of small stature is sensed sitting on the passenger seat. It also senses the presence of a child restraint on the seat, and will suppress airbag deployment accordingly.

The detection system uses a mat sensor embedded in the passenger seat that establishes the occupant’s weight and weight distribution. If this is below a certain level, the sensor alerts the SDM central control unit and the front passenger airbag will not deploy.
senses children and small-stature adults and suppresses air bag deployment when appropriate.

Standard OnStar service assists after a crash. With OnStar’s Advanced Crash Response System, the vehicle automatically sends a signal to OnStar for assistance, even if the air bags don’t deploy.

While the Chevrolet Camaro may be out to save General Motors, one Camaro is out to save the whole world. It’s name is Bumblebee and GM showed him off in Chicago ahead of the Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen movie.

While the Canaro is only about 4.5 feet tall, this Autobot grows to almost 17 feet (5.2 meters) tall and 13 feet (4 meters) wide.

“Chevrolet is thrilled to again be part of one of the most anticipated movies in years,” said Ed Peper, GM North America vice president. “Transformers’ gives us a great opportunity to connect with young people on their terms, with a dynamic, environmentally friendly image. The new characters represent the change going on in Chevy showrooms.”

Next to it, from the Chevrolet line-up there will also be the Sideswipe, the mystery Chevrolet Corvette Centennial Concept.

We don’t have to speculate anymore…the mystery Chevrolet Corvette Centennial Concept is finally revealed!

The concept will be a character called “Sideswipe” in the new Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen movie. General Motors says the design is not only influenced by the original Stingray race car, introduced in 1959, but also draws on Corvette heritage cues from other generations. “Sideswipe represents an exercise in exploration for the Corvette,” said Ed Welburn, vice president of GM Global Design. “By giving my creative team the freedom to design no-holds-barred vision concepts, it helps them push boundaries and look at projects from different perspectives.”

There is no information on the engine because there isn’t one. Right now this retro Stingray is little more than a styling model. But this is obviously cool enough that with a little hope, and a lot of money, my show some of GM’s future.

The all-new Chevrolet Spark, making its world premiere at the Geneva auto show in March, is a small car designed to make a big statement. It’s big on style, big on fuel economy and, like all products carrying the Chevrolet gold bowtie, big on refinement and value.

Its design breaks the mold for mini-cars and takes Chevrolet’s signature styling elements to this vehicle segment in a youthful, fun and fashion-conscious way.

Spark was inspired by the Chevrolet Beat concept, the most popular of a trio of mini-car concepts that has toured international auto shows since 2007. A clear majority among 1.9 million internet voters said it was the car they wanted produced.

Exterior

The crisp lines of the five-door hatchback provide a wedge-like profile. Below Chevrolet’s hallmark two-tier grille and headlamps that resemble diamond cut lines, the shape of the fog lamp housings and the “floating” lower air intake extend the sense of forward movement. Strong wheel arches accommodate up to 15-inch wheels to give the car a dynamic, ready-to-go stance.

The rear door handles are integrated into the upper part of the door to preserve the clean lines of rear quarter panel and wheel arches. In the rear, an integrated tailgate spoiler and Chevrolet’s round tail lights add to Spark’s appeal.

With an overall length of 3,640 mm and a generous 2,375 mm wheelbase, Spark offers a spacious cabin with outstanding leg and hip room in the front and rear.

Interior

The design of Spark’s spacious cabin clearly matches its fun and fashion exterior look and functionality. A unique feature is the motorcycle-inspired instrument cluster. Mounted on the steering column, it provides easy- to- read information to the driver utilizing a combination of analog and digital displays.

With fresh colors and fabrics, exterior color schemes continue inside to Chevrolet’s signature ’dual cockpit’ layout and the door panels. Textured inserts flow from the instrument panel to each side of the cabin into the doors, adding another eye-catching element to the interior.

Spark also boasts a high level of interior acoustic refinements typical of larger vehicles.

Engines and safety

Sales will start in Europe featuring 1.0 and 1.2-liter 16-valve four-cylinder double overhead camshaft gasoline engines, delivering excellent fuel efficiency and low emissions.

Depending on global markets, safety equipment includes driver and passenger front air bags, front side airbags, roof rail head curtain airbags, antilock brakes and electronic stability control. Other safety features include pre-tensioners for front seat belts and three-point belts in the rear. Spark has been developed and is expected to achieve high crash test ratings.

Europe leads start of sales

Spark will be available in European dealerships early 2010, followed by other global regions. Spark is the newest in a series of all-new, globally developed Chevrolet vehicles that are defined by expressive design, refinement and value.

Chevrolet unveiled the all-new 2010 Equinox, a compact crossover that blends distinctive design with outstanding efficiency. A new, 2.4L direct injection engine helps the Equinox deliver expected best-in-segment estimated highway fuel economy of 30 mpg (EPA certification pending) – a 25-percent improvement over the previous model. Chevrolet expects nearly two-thirds of customers will choose the efficient, 2.4L engine.

The new Equinox draws its exterior design inspiration from the Chevrolet Malibu sedan and Traverse crossover; and like those vehicles, the new Equinox complements its styling with attention to detail and unexpected features, according to Ed Peper, GM North America vice president, Chevrolet.

The Equinox makes its world debut at the North American Auto Show in Detroit next month.

“At a time when customers are so concerned about the fuel efficiency of their vehicle, the Equinox delivers,” said Peper. “It offers the roominess and capability of a crossover with great fuel economy. Equinox will provide customers a vehicle filled with refinement, comfort and great value.”

The 2010 Equinox goes on sale in mid-2009. It is available in LS, LT and LTZ trim, with available all-wheel-drive. Two new engines are offered, each with fuel-saving direct injection and variable valve timing technology. Vehicle highlights include:

New 2.4L Ecotec direct injected I-4 engine estimated at 182 horsepower (135 kW), which delivers an estimated 30 mpg highway, 21 mpg city (EPA certification pending)

New 3.0L DOHC direct injected V-6 engine estimated at 255 horsepower (190 kW), which delivers an estimated 25 mpg highway, 18 mpg city (EPA certification pending)

Driving range of more than 500 miles (800 km) with both engines, for less-frequent fill-ups

Six standard air bags: dual frontal air bags; head curtain side air bags and pelvic/thorax seat-mounted side air bags

Standard four-wheel disc brakes with StabiliTrak electronic stability control and traction control

Standard OnStar and XM Satellite Radio

“Smart” remote starting system that also activates the HVAC system and optional heated seats depending on the outside temperature

“With the 2010 Equinox, we focused on appealing to the senses – from the overall design to the feel of the interior,” said Peper.

Design details

The design features Chevy’s signature global face – the two-tier grille and prominent gold Bowtie insignia. Strong fender shapes, a distinctive premium roofline, wraparound headlamps and dual round taillamps are additional elements that define Equinox as a true Chevrolet, Peper said.

“The new Equinox blends function and style into a very sporty, yet upscale compact crossover,” said Ed Welburn, vice president of GM Global Design. “Both the exterior and interior surprise and delight with careful attention to detail.”

Additional design features include:

A multi-dimensional hood and wraparound rear side glass and a wheels-at-the-corners stance
Improved aerodynamic performance through a number of carefully designed exterior features, including moving the base of the windshield forward approximately three inches (75 mm) for a sleeker profile

Equinox’s rocker panels are integrated into the doors to make it easier to get in and out of the vehicle. They narrow the area over which a passenger must step, offering protection for pant legs that could brush against dirty rockers. Also, the select use of chrome trim and flush-fitting ”exposed-edge” windshield and rear glass reinforce Equinox’s build quality and reduce wind noise.

Dimensionally, the Equinox rides on the same 112.5-inch wheelbase (2,857 mm), but is about one inch (25 mm) shorter in length and an inch wider. It also has a wider front track that enhances the ride and handling.

Interior amenities, storage and flexibility

Inside, the Equinox features attention to detail – including a number of storage bins, such as an oversized glove box; a closed storage bin in the instrument panel above the center stack; and closed storage under the center armrest large enough for a laptop computer.

A “floating” center stack houses a multitude of ergonomic comfort and convenience controls. Contemporary, ice-blue ambient lighting – featured within and surrounding the center stack, encircling the center-console cupholders and within the door pull cups – accentuates the cabin. The front and rear seats, which include cloth and uplevel, perforated leather-trimmed offerings, were developed to help deliver best-in-class comfort.

The new Equinox retains its MultiFlex rear seat capability, which allows the seat to be moved fore or aft nearly eight inches (203 mm), for the best rear legroom in its class. With the 60/40-split-back rear seat moved all the way forward, the cargo area offers 31.4 cubic feet (889 liters) of storage.

The Equinox’s cabin is notable for its quietness. Noise-absorbing elements are built into the chassis, engine compartment and interior.

Convenience, infotainment and connectivity

A variety of technologies are integrated in the Equinox, such as an available seven-inch touch-screen navigation system. Additional features also include:

Bluetooth hands-free phone connectivity

USB audio connectivity

DVD-based rear-seat entertainment system with two independent screens to enable DVD viewing on one and gaming on the other

Internal memory/hard drive on uplevel radios for storing audio selections

Power, programmable rear liftgate

Rear-vision camera system, with display in the rearview mirror or in the navigation screen

Range of premium-feature audio systems with up to eight speakers and 250 watts of output

Chassis and suspension

The 2010 Equinox is built on a body-integral structure with single-piece body side stampings and targeted applications of high-strength steel. Those elements form the foundation of a solid, quiet driving experience, according to Peper. The strong structure enabled engineers to tune the four-wheel-independent suspension system for greater control and driver feedback.

Standard and available features include:

Available all wheel drive

Family of 17-, 18- and 19-inch alloy wheels

Fuel-saving electric power steering system

The rack-mounted electric power steering system provides greater fuel efficiency of on 2.4L-equipped models that saves nearly 11 miles per tank of gas, or about 572 miles per year (assuming one fill-up per week). With the Equinox’s estimated 30 mpg on the highway, the electric power steering system saves the equivalent of approximately one tank of gas each year.

“With the outstanding interior execution and comfort, the stunning exterior design, numerous chassis improvements, and the connectivity to the outside world, the new Equinox is the favorite ride among our engineers,” said Tim Herrick, chief engineer. “I have to pull the keys out of their hands in order to take it for a spin myself.”

General Motors revealed the Chevrolet GPiX crossover coupe concept today at the 25th edition of the Sao Paulo International Auto Show. The Chevrolet GPiX concept was developed by General Motors Design in Brazil and represents a potential new segment for GM in the Mercosur region.

The GPiX concept features a two-door body style with high ground clearance appropriate for the types of roads and conditions found in emerging markets. “It offers the sporty design and versatility necessary for a country with the continental dimensions of Brazil,” said Carlos Barba, General Director of Design for GM Latin America, Africa and Middle East.

GPiX also combines Chevrolet’s global design “DNA” with the cost-benefit proposition necessary to compete in today’s emerging markets. Jaime Ardila, President of General Motors Brazil and Mercosur said, “with this project, the Chevrolet GPiX concept could result in the development of many models for Brazil and the Mercosur region.”

Dynamic and daring design

The GPiX concept draws attention with its strong profile and a lateral waistline that exudes dynamism. Its daring front end is highlighted by the famous Chevrolet gold bowtie in the front grille and LED headlamps. The 17-inch mixed-use wheels and tires add a rugged look to the crossover coupe. And, the panoramic glass roof provides maximum light in the passenger compartment and increases the sensation of space.

Versatile on the inside with space for four

The GPiX concept stands out even more for its versatility and technology. Its interior is functional with seating for four. All seats fold and the floor panel is flat, which increases spaciousness.

The instrument panel has a modern design, with easy-to-read digital displays. The multifunctional steering wheel has a completely new design and is made for total driver-car interaction. The driver can easily use the connectivity and entertainment systems available, such as Bluetooth, hand-held computers, CD player and MP3 player, among others.

It also includes features that customers have come to expect in production Chevrolet vehicles offered in Brazil, such as air conditioning, power steering and power windows.

The name GPiX is a pseudonym for Global Image. “G” for global and “Pix” meaning “picture” or “image”.

GM Design Center in Brazil

GM’s Design Center in Brazil is one of 11 GM studios around the world. Its facilities are being expanded to meet increased responsibilities in the GM global development process.

GM is investing US$ 36 million to expand the facilities, acquire new and more modern equipment and hire new professionals. When complete, the GM Design Center in Brazil will triple in size from 3,000 sq. m. to 9,150 sq. m. and the staff will increase from 79 to 190 professionals.

The Design Center, which was already one of the most modern in Brazil, will also add next generation equipment to its ’3D’ virtual reality facility to become the most advanced studio in the country and on par with any automotive design studio in the world.

The Orlando show car is a clear indication that Chevrolet is considering an expansion to its portfolio with a seven-seat multi-purpose vehicle (MPV) with distinctive sport-utility-like design, adaptable seating and impressive interior space.

Based on the recently announced all-new Cruze compact sedan, the Orlando show car carries Chevrolet’s signature design language into a new vehicle segment. It explores the potential of combining the versatility attributes of a sport utility, a family van and a wagon in a single execution.

Chevrolet Orlando cuts a distinctive silhouette, replacing conventional monocab proportions with a more defined contrast between the hood and windshield lines. With flared fenders instead of a flat side-body, Orlando has a muscular stance that gives it the appearance of a sport utility vehicle, yet it offers dynamic ride and handling, excellent fuel efficiency and easy entry thanks to its car-based architecture.

Inside, the five-door Orlando is designed to meet the needs of families and those who need plenty of seating capacity with adaptable, theater-style seating in three rows that comfortably accommodate up to seven occupants. Whenever load carrying becomes a priority, the spacious cabin can be quickly transformed into a large cargo area. A generous 2,760 mm wheelbase and wide front and rear tracks provide Orlando with outstanding interior roominess.

Chevrolet’s latest-generation, 2.0-liter turbo diesel, developing 150 hp/110 kW and 320 Nm of torque, provides a powerful and efficient powertrain.

Strong Design Statement

Orlando takes Chevrolet’s design into the multi-purpose vehicle segment. The front features the brand’s signature twin-port grille and the large, sweeping headlamp housings seen on the Cruze. It also incorporates a concave shoulder line that extends along the body into the wraparound tail lights, another design feature from the Cruze that will distinguish future-generation Chevrolet products.

This distinctive look is complemented by the flared fender lines, defining a ’wheels-out/body-in’ stance that visually lowers the higher roof line. The ice-blue theme for instrument illumination is also used on the exterior of Orlando in the laser-etched surfacing of the headlamps, tail lights and full-length glass roof.

Inside, Orlando features Chevrolet’s ’dual cockpit’ design theme, with grained, dark grey accents extending outwards either side of the center stack.

The cabin is designed to meet the demands of families and those who need plenty of seating capacity with infotainment options and navigation. Overhead, a storage compartment extends along the center of the roof, providing useful stowage space for rear passengers. Design details include a center stack recess to hold a personal device/MP3 player when it is connected to the USB or Aux ports. Further storage space is provided inside the floor console, the second row center arm-rest and under the floor in the rear.

The raised roof enables a theater-style seating layout. It provides all occupants, particularly children, with an improved view inside and outside the vehicle, while enabling conversation between all those on board.

Adaptable Interior

A generous 2,760 mm wheelbase, 75 mm longer than that of the new Cruze sedan, and front and rear tracks 40 mm and 30 mm wider, provide Orlando with seating and cargo-carrying space that is among best-in-class for compact MPVs.

It is a true seven-seater, with second and third row legroom of 950 mm and 753 mm, respectively. The reverse faces of these seat backs are covered in a tough, metal finish and can be folded completely flat for easy loading. A range of occupant and load-carrying configurations is provided by 60/40 second-row and 50/50 third-row split folding seating.

“We focused on giving Orlando a strong, robust appearance,” says Designer Seungwoo Kim. “It draws on Chevrolet’s tradition for honest, simple design, while at the same time extending our new design language into the compact multi-purpose vehicle segment.”

The Young? Creative? Chevrolet! 2008 European Visual Arts winner project, a new original design for the Lacetti race car, “Real horse power”, will be on the track for the 17th and 18th races of the World Touring Car Championship (WTCC) in Imola, Italy, on September 21. During this weekend, the WTCC driver Alain Menu will race in a new black and gold Chevrolet Lacetti.

This new and original decoration is the winning design of the pan-European “Young, Creative, Chevrolet” competition created by Chevrolet in cooperation with applied art schools across Europe.

Adi Šumić from Academy of Design (Slovenia), the European Visual Arts winner of the competition launched by Chevrolet to seek and stimulate young artists, is invited to Imola to witness and appreciate his redesigned car competing at the WTCC race. One week after receiving his First Prize at the European Awards ceremony held in the renowned dome of the Mole Antonelliana in Turin, Italy, the winning student will experience a very special time. He will also have the opportunity to discover all aspects linked with motor sports.

I liked the challenge to participate in a real project for an international renowned brand. My idea was to create something new, fresh and out-of-the-box, so I gathered some ideas drew some sketches and finally started to design on the computer, bringing the Lacetti and the horse together, says Adi Šumić.

Alain Menu, who will also wear a matching racing overall, comments: “I’m always in for something a bit out of the ordinary and it would be great to end up on the podium particularly this weekend, bringing this exceptional ’art car’ to win the race. The Chevrolet arts competition is a great initiative to help create interest in the WTCC from quarters not necessarily familiar with racing. Adi’s project is incredibly creative and both elegant and eye-catching. It is inspiring. A great spirit, an amazing car!”

Adi Šumić was also invited to visit RML’s U.K. workshops to watch the regular two-tone blue Chevrolet being turned into his moving work of art representing a stylized race horse.

Following the Young? Creative? Chevrolet! Awards ceremony in Turin, the winning Visual Arts project was also brought to the hippodrome of the Italian city for an original photo shoot. The art car raced along with a real horse. This new experience was inspired by Adi’s idea to draw a horse on a race car.

A “Real horse power” watch

The “Real horse power” visual art project has also inspired Louis Chevrolet watches to create a special-edition watch model featuring Adi Šumić’s horse design. In the best quality tradition of Swiss watch making, André and Josette Saunier and their company, AJS, produce these exclusive time pieces, which draw their inspiration from the times of the automotive and aeronautical pioneers, such Louis Chevrolet and are a tribute to the Chevrolet brand.

What GM wants you to know…

Exterior

The car is quite attractive in person. Pictures don’t do it justice, especially the unflattering promotional pictures released earlier this month. As mentioned in our interview with Bob Lutz, styling was made with the eye for aerodynamics.

The concept car was beautiful, radical, and completely irrational. A car with flat sides kills fuel economy. So GM could have delivered the production car exactly as shown, but it would have been like owing a fancy Malibu. Instead the production Volt is in the spirit of the concept design, just a little rounder.

General Motors kept all the little details, and this looks like a complete car.

Interior

The interior is an attractive set-up. The car is designed to be encasing. The Volt’s interior design manager, Tim Grieg, believes that if the car had an open, airy feeling then it would lose its sporty feeling. Because of this, all four passengers get bucket seats with clear dividers separating each one from the other. The seating is also limited to four because of battery storage.

The center controls are very reminiscent of the iPod (in fact, the only color choices are white or black,) Grieg insists Apple’s media machine was never used for inspiration. Most controls are located on an iPod-like electrostatic touch panel, which means there are few buttons, but multiple points on a single panel to access climate control, radio, and other comfort functions. People who are reluctant to use this technology (anyone who’s used an worn out touch screen for example) may not like the dash panel at first. Grieg has assured that in testing, the panel can accurately detect where an approaching fingers is, and the panel will shut off other nearby buttons to avoid incorrect inputs.

The navigation screen on the final production will actually better integrated into the dash. The one currently shown was developed when engineers were working on a folding design, but it was rejected because it used too much energy.

In fact, this car is analyzed for all energy usage. Convenience items systems such as power windows and heated seats are standard on the Volt for their ability to save power. Because the drive has the ability to put down all windows easily, the car can cool off quicker, saving energy from the air conditioner. The heated seats provide a more direct heating sensation, saving the heater from having to regulate the whole car.

Drivetrain

The Volt is designed to be charged in about 8 hours on a normal household 110-volt outlet (3 hours for 220v). That charge should last for 40 miles and cost about $.80. A gasoline engine generating power for the electric motor will supplement any miles after that. Giving the car a total range of about 340 miles. Frank Weber, GM’s Global Chief Engineer, says that anyone who drives around 15,000 miles per year could possibly never use the gas engine.

The car has the equivalent of 150 horsepower and 273 ft lbs of torque. GM claims this is good for 0-60 times in about nine seconds and a top speed of 100 mph.

The car utilized the same kind of lithium-ion batteries that are found in cell phones. Unlike the phone’s battery, which will have a noticeable loss in charge capacity over a few years, the Volt’s battery should hold the same charge over its five-year lifetime. This is partially accomplished because the never fully charge (usually 80% full) and never fully discharge (about 30% empty) over its lifetime. This means less stress on the over 220 battery cells in the car.

Many of the more conventional parts of the Volt (suspension, steering rod, etc.) are shared with the upcoming Chevrolet Cruze. This means a host of parts that will be less expensive to produce and repair in a car that will start out with only about 10,000 units in its first year.

The reality…

General Motors doesn’t want you to call the Volt a hybrid. It says that this is in a new segment called E-REV (Extended-Range Electric Vehicle). The truth is GM is half right. The Volt was designed to be run on pure electric. GM figures that most of its drivers will accomplish their daily tasks under the 40 miles that can come from a full battery charge. The gasoline engine is only used beyond the 40 miles or sooner if not fully charged. The car can either be run by charging the battery with electricity or filling the tank with gas. Although this is a new slant on fuel efficiency that may deserve its own category, it also falls under the exact definition of a hybrid car.

The exterior takes some heat for being more conventional than the concept. The explanation has always been it simply needed to change to keep fuel economy. Bob Lutz once said that the concept was, “more aerodynamic going backwards than forwards.” The production car now looks a little more like a conventional GM sedan. This is ok because THE VOLT IS A SEDAN! It would be nice to have a radical looking car, but if the Volt’s design goes too far on the fringe of mainstream, it doesn’t get accepted by middle America. Without full support, it will defeat the purpose of a mass produced alternative energy car.

The interior is amazing. By far the best GM has put on any car both by materials and appearance. This is where the car gets to show off the design talent (now that the exterior is dictated by its wind-cheating ability.) More than anything else, this is the piece of technology that GM must spread to the rest of the car families, and it needs to have out there today. The interiors of most GM cars of today are on par with the competition, but the touch panel is the leap ahead that would give GM a great showroom advantage.

General Motors launched its next 100 years today by unveiling the much-anticipated production version of the Chevrolet Volt – a vehicle that delivers up to 40 miles of gasoline- and emissions-free electric driving, with the extended-range capability of hundreds of additional miles.

“Revealing the production version of the Chevy Volt is a great way to open our second century,” said Rick Wagoner, GM Chairman and CEO. “The Volt is symbolic of GM’s strong commitment to the future … just the kind of technology innovation that our industry needs to respond to today’s and tomorrow’s energy and environmental challenges.”

Form follows function

The design of the Chevrolet Volt production car has evolved from the original concept that was unveiled at the 2007 North American International Auto Show in Detroit.

Because aerodynamics plays a key role in maximizing driving range, GM designers created an aerodynamically efficient design for the production vehicle. Many of the design cues from the concept vehicle endure in the production Volt, including the closed front grille, athletic stance, rear design graphics, outside rearview mirrors and more. The Volt’s rounded and flush front fascia, tapered corners and grille are functional, enabling air to move easily around the car. In the rear, sharp edges and a carefully designed spoiler allow the air to flow off and away quickly. An aggressive rake on the windshield and back glass help reduce turbulence and drag.

Working closely with GM aerodynamicists to shape the Volt, design and engineering teams developed one of the most aerodynamic vehicles in GM’s history. They spent hundreds of hours with the Volt in GM’s wind tunnel, testing and re-testing parts such as the front and rear quarter panels, rear spoiler, rockers and side mirrors. Aerodynamic improvements enabled GM to reach the Volt’s target of driving up to 40 miles (based on EPA city cycle) without using gasoline or producing emissions.

Inside, the Volt offers the space, comfort, convenience and safety features that customers expect in a four-passenger sedan, and it delivers them in a variety of interior color, lighting and trim options unlike any offered before on a Chevrolet sedan. Modern controls and attractive materials, two informational displays, and a touch-sensitive infotainment center with integrated shifter distinguish the Volt’s interior from other vehicles in the market.

Some of Volt’s interior technological features include:

Driver-configurable, liquid crystal instrument display

Standard seven-inch touch screen vehicle information display

Touch screen-style climate and infotainment controls

Optional navigation system with onboard hard drive for maps and music storage

Standard Bluetooth for cellular phone and USB/Bluetooth for music streaming

New era in automotive transportation

The Chevrolet Volt is leading a new era of electrification of the automobile by creating a new class of vehicle known as the Extended-Range Electric Vehicle, or E-REV.

The Volt uses electricity to move the wheels at all times and speeds. For trips up to 40 miles, the Volt is powered only by electricity stored in its 16-kWh, lithium-ion battery. When the battery’s energy is depleted, a gasoline/E85-powered engine generator seamlessly provides electricity to power the Volt’s electric drive unit while simultaneously sustaining the charge of the battery. This mode of operation extends the range of the Volt for several hundred additional miles, until the vehicle’s battery can be charged. Unlike a conventional battery-electric vehicle, the Volt eliminates “range anxiety,” giving the confidence and peace of mind that the driver will not be stranded by a depleted battery.

The Chevrolet Volt can be plugged either into a standard household 120v outlet or use 240v for charging. The vehicle’s intelligent charging technology enables the Volt’s battery to be charged in less than three hours on a 240v outlet or about eight hours on a 120v outlet. Charge times are reduced if the battery has not been fully depleted. At a cost of about 80 cents per day (10 cents per kWh) for a full charge that will deliver up to 40 miles of electric driving, GM estimates that the Volt will be less expensive to recharge than purchasing a cup of your favorite coffee. Charging the Volt about once daily will consume less electric energy annually than the average home’s refrigerator and freezer units.

Charge out of driving

The Chevrolet Volt offers spirited driving performance in a remarkably quiet interior. More than 220 lithium-ion cells contained within the Volt’s battery pack provide ample power. The Volt’s electric drive unit delivers the equivalent of 150 horsepower, 273 lb-ft. (370 Nm) of instant torque, and a top speed of 100 miles per hour. The lack of engine noise, combined with special sound-deadening materials, make the Chevrolet Volt an extremely quiet vehicle to drive.

GM estimates that the Volt will cost about two cents per mile to drive while under battery power compared to 12 cents per mile using gasoline priced at $3.60 per gallon. For an average driver who drives 40 miles per day (or 15,000 miles per year), this amounts to a cost savings of $1,500 annually. Using peak electric rates, GM estimates that an electrically driven mile in a Chevy Volt will be about one-sixth of the cost of a conventional gasoline-powered vehicle. The cost savings are even greater when charging during off-peak hours, when electric rates are cheaper.

The Chevrolet Volt is expected to be built at GM’s Detroit-Hamtramck manufacturing facility, subject to GM successfully negotiating satisfactory government incentives. Production is scheduled to begin late 2010 for models in the United States. Pricing has not been announced. Visit media.gm.com/volt for more information.

General Motors revealed images and details on the 2010 Camaro SS, the most powerful version of the newly launched 2010 Camaro.

The SS features raunchier front bumper fascia with mail slot in the top, SS badges on rear and grille. Add the optional RS appearance upgrade and the SS gets HID headlamps with integrated halo rings, spoiler, specific taillamps and 20-inch wheels

Chevy’s popular Impala continues to be one of America’s top vehicles in sales, thanks to a value story rooted in timeless design, a long list of standard features and a range of efficient powertrains – including a segment-exclusive V-8 in the Impala SS.

For 2009, Impala’s value story is bolstered by new standard safety features, including thorax side-impact air bags and safety belt pretensioners for the front-seat lap belts. Anti-lock brakes and traction control are now standard on all models. Available is new Bluetooth phone connectivity through the OnStar system. Bluetooth technology enables hands-free phone calling, with personal cell phone calls connected via the Impala’s audio system.

“In a very tough segment, the Impala continues to shine as one of its stars,” said Ed Peper, Chevrolet general manager. “More and more customers are finding the Impala not only offers a value-packed combination of features, but delivers it in a smart, efficient manner.”

When it comes to efficiency and fuel options, Impala has one of the most compelling stories in the market. The standard 3.5L V-6 is EPA-rated at 29 mpg on the highway, giving it fuel economy that matches or beats many smaller cars. Both the 3.5L and 3.9L engines are available with E85 FlexFuel capability.

The Impala SS is an efficient performer, too, with a 5.3L V-8 and Active Fuel Management. It is rated at 303 horsepower and has a highway mileage rating of 24 mpg. Active Fuel Management can improve fuel economy by up to 12 percent in certain driving conditions.

New for 2009

In addition to the new thorax side-impact air bags, pretensioners for the front-seat lap belts and Bluetooth connectivity, changes to the ’09 Impala lineup are evolutionary and reflect streamlined packaging of popular features. They include:

New-design 18-inch flangeless, polished aluminum wheel for the Impala SS

Four-wheel disc brakes with ABS and traction control are now standard on all models

Common rear spoiler design for all models (SS-style)

Revised rocker molding design

Dual-zone manual climate control is now standard on all models

Revised cup holder design

Illuminated vanity mirrors for the driver and front passenger are now standard on all models

There are also three new exterior colors: Silver Ice Metallic, Aqua Blue Metallic and Victory Red. They replace Precision Red, Dark Silver Metallic and Silverstone Metallic.

Impala design

Chevy Impala conveys sophistication and exudes big-car roominess. On the exterior, large headlamps have a premium, jeweled appearance with three independent lighting units. These details complement other high-quality attributes, such as tight tolerances of 3.5 mm or less between body components and substantial “grab”-style door handles, to provide an overall feeling of solidity. Also, flat-blade windshield wipers are used to provide consistent pressure on the glass, which helps eliminate streaking and wind noise.

The Impala LS, LT and LTZ models have varied exterior trim cues that identify each model, while the Impala SS receives a distinct front-end appearance. It includes a dual-split grille with a SS-signature black-diamond crosshatch pattern. At the rear, a spoiler is standard on LTZ and SS models and is available on LT. The Impala SS also receives Corvette-inspired bright exhaust tips.

Inside, Impala is packed with thoughtful features, including clever flip-and-fold rear seats (standard on LTZ and SS, available on LT). The forward-flip rear seat cushions reveal a storage tub under the seat that can contain s—-age while transporting a variety of items. The tub also serves as a covered storage area beneath the seat with the cushions down, and offers convenient grocery bag hooks when the cushions are flipped forward. A generous pass-through from the trunk can be created by flipping the seat bottoms forward and the seat backs flat – an exclusive feature in the midsize segment.

All of Impala’s available seating features clean, simple and tailored appearances. Uplevel Nuance leather- appointed seating features premium deck seams around their perimeter and French seams on the center cushions. The seats also have firm cushions and lumbar support that provide more comfort, especially during long drives. The driver’s seat also includes adjustable lumbar.

The Impala’s instrument panel wraps around into the door panels and has a double-hump design that is reminiscent of early Corvettes. Impala LS, LT and LTZ models have a wood-trimmed appearance, while the Impala SS comes standard with a “technical”-pattern trim panel, with the wood-trimmed appearance as an option.

Completing the Impala’s comprehensive interior is a host of useful comfort and convenience features, including:

Dual-zone climate control system with up to 12 degrees F temperature setting difference between the two front zones

Available factory-installed remote vehicle start system with a 200-foot (61-meter) range and automatic climate pre-conditioning to warm or cool the vehicle prior to entry (Impala LS features available dealer-installed remote start)

Informative gauge clusters and an expanded driver information center – with more than 50 alerts, depending on the vehicle’s equipment

Standard easy-access, steering wheel-mounted cruise control buttons

Steering wheel radio controls on uplevel models

Eight-way, heated power driver seat standard on LTZ and SS leather-appointed seats; six-way power driver seat standard on LS, LT with cloth seats

OnStar system offers Turn-by-Turn Navigation

Three audio systems feature simple-to-operate radios that include standard XM Satellite Radio and are compatible with the enhanced OnStar system. The base MP3/CD radio includes a six-speaker system, a two-line, 32-character reconfigurable display and the capability to select between AM, FM and XM stations without having to reset the frequency. An uplevel ICDX radio adds an in-dash six-CD changer. Impala also offers a premium Bose audio system.

All radios include a standard auxiliary input jack for external devices such as an iPod. Located in the lower right-hand corner of each radio, the input allows for plug-and-play through Impala’s sound system.

Chassis and suspension

Quiet, smoothness and refinement are the ride and handling traits conveyed through the Impala’s chassis and suspension systems. A robust front-end structure provides a firmer foundation to help reduce noise, vibration and harshness (NVH), while also enhancing steering and handling performance.

Impala’s fully boxed upper frame rail assemblies have a wider, deeper and structurally stronger upper front tie bar. Stronger ties between the upper and lower rails stiffen the front structure for improved ride and handling and a large, lower front-of-dash panel has been strengthened. To reduce resonant sound, it is constructed of Quiet Steel laminated steel, which consists of sound-deadening material bonded between sheets of steel.

An extruded aluminum engine cradle is used on both vehicles, too, and contributes to a smoother, vibration-free ride. The cradle’s lateral stiffness (at the steering joint) is increased with a new, one-piece machined rear cross member and new aluminum rear body mounts to help improve handling control. Models equipped with a V-6 engine have a two-point engine-mounting system, while V-8 models have a three-point mounting system.

A power rack-and-pinion steering system is standard on all models, with a responsive 13.3:1 steering ratio on LT, LTZ and SS models. All models feature a quiet, efficient power steering system that optimizes internal flow of the hydraulic steering fluid within the pump and reservoirs.

The front suspension features a MacPherson strut coil-over-spring independent setup with gas-charged struts and a stabilizer bar. Tall jounce bumpers in the front suspension help enhance stability and control. The rear suspension uses a trailing arm, tri-link setup with gas-charged struts and coil springs. A rear stabilizer bar is standard on all models. Based on the basic front and rear suspension designs, the Impala offers two levels of suspension tuning – FE1 and FE3 – each matched to the power and expected performance level of its respective model

FE1 (LS and LT): The FE1 suspension provides great control without compromising ride quality. It uses stiff, constant-rate front springs and variable-rate rear springs to provide higher roll rates and, at the front, a stiffer torque strut design reduces NVH and helps provide a smoother, quieter ride. The packages include 16-inch wheels and P225/60R16 ALS (all-season) Goodyear Integrity radials; on LT models equipped with the 3.9L V-6, it includes 17-inch wheels and P225/55R17 AL2 (touring) Goodyear Eagle LS2 radials.

FE3 ( LTZ and SS): Impala LTZ and SS models receive a FE3 suspension, which includes 18-inch W-rated P235/50R18 AL3 (performance) tires and five-spoke alloy wheels, to provide a sporty ride that complements the 5.3L small-block V-8’s performance. A 34-mm hollow front stabilizer bar and 18-mm solid rear stabilizer bar combine to provide more roll control than the FE1 or FE2 suspensions. Also, increased stiffness helps reduce body lean and contributes to greater high-speed stability.

Powertrain details

Impala’s V-6 engines are as fuel-efficient as they are sophisticated. A 3.5L V-6 is standard in the Impala LS and LT, delivering 211 horsepower (157 kW)* and 214 lb.-ft. (290 Nm)* of torque – more standard power as a base engine than some key competitors’ top (or only) offering.

Vehicles with federal emissions systems in the United States are equipped with the 3.5L engine, which is compatible with E85 ethanol fuel, allowing the vehicle to run on any combination of gasoline and/or E85. Vehicles sold in YF5 ( California) or NE1 (Northeast) emissions are equipped with PZEV versions of the 3.5L engine. This engine is not E85-compatible. Customers in these areas have the option of ordering E85-compatible engines.

Standard in LTZ and available in LT models is the 3.9L V-6 that features E85 FlexFuel capability. This engine offers more power and usable torque within its operating range, with 90 percent of peak torque available from 1,800 to 5,800 rpm. It is rated at 224 horsepower (167 kW) and 235 lb.-ft. of torque (319 Nm).

The 5.3L all-aluminum small-block V-8 powers the performance-oriented Impala SS. It features Active Fuel Management, which can provide up to 12 percent better fuel economy. Developed exclusively for front-drive applications, the SS’s 5.3L engine produces 303 horsepower (226 kW)* and 323 lb.-ft. (438 Nm)* of torque.

All of Impala’s engines are matched with the Hydra-Matic 4T65 electronically controlled four-speed automatic transmission, which is renowned for its smoothness and durability. A strengthened version is equipped with the 5.3L engine to handle the V-8’s torque.

Safety and crash avoidance

Impala offers standard side curtain air bags, which provide optimum head protection for outboard passengers. The side curtain air bags are mounted in the side roof rails and deploy down to the lower edge of the windows from the A—–ar to the C—–ar. Impala’s other safety features include:

StabiliTrak electronic stability control system is standard on 2LT, LTZ and SS models

Four-wheel-disc brake system featuring smooth, quiet operation, longer pad life, and more resistance to brake pulsation

ABS is standard on all models and helps provide improved steering control while braking. It also includes Electronic Brake Force Distribution, which helps provide optimum braking regardless of load, traction or braking speed

Traction control system is standard on all models and works with the ABS system to help ensure stable acceleration on a variety of road conditions

Pretensioners are standard on the front safety belts, helping to minimize forward movement during a frontal collision. New, more effective load-limiting retractors have more “take-up” force to cinch the belt more tightly

Three-point safety belts are equipped in all standard seating positions

LATCH (Lower Anchors and Tethers for CHildren) child seat attachment system is included in all second-row seating positions

Tire pressure monitoring system is standard on all models

Standard remote keyless entry (RKE) system provides a second function for the red panic button. Drivers can use the button to locate their cars, without sounding the panic alarm.

The Impala includes features designed to enhance the vehicle structure, including lighter, more rigid front and rear bumper systems. Also, the Impala features a strengthened “safety cage” passenger compartment with the front and rear doors designed for improved energy dissipation in the event of a crash.

OnStar details

The OnStar system is standard on Impala. Its digital hardware includes upgraded hands-free voice recognition capabilities, including more intuitive continuous digit dialing and improved voice recognition accuracy. OnStar is the leading provider of in-vehicle safety, security and information services in the United States and Canada. Using the GPS satellite network and wireless technology, OnStar features core safety services and OnStar Personal Calling that allows drivers to make and receive hands-free, voice-activated phone calls using a powerful 3-watt digital/analog system and external antenna for greater reception.

The OnStar service available on the Impala includes the Advanced Crash Response System, making crash data available to 911 centers to potentially dispatch the appropriate life-saving personnel and equipment to crash scenes faster.

Impala’s OnStar system also offers Turn-by-Turn Navigation with the optional Directions and Connections service. Turn-by-Turn Navigation directs the driver through the route by using the digital readout lines in the radio head. Directions are downloaded by the OnStar advisor to the vehicle and can be played back or paused through the drive up to the destination. Besides being an easy-to-use system (all directions are downloaded to the car by an advisor) Turn-by-Turn offers an affordable system that is always up to date (no need to purchase map updates).
